I only ever pulled 1 motor out of the bottom and ill never make that mistake again.
out of the top is the quickest and simplist way to go out and on the bench in 40 mins.
I used to know a guy who worked in a mini scrapyard he used to pull 3 motors out in an hour, increadable to watch.

 Coz it is!

My theory was this....

Just keep undiong bolts that look like they are holding the subframe to the body (10 in total I think), then get a mate to help lift the body up and over. My wife helped me!

It was hard to 'crack' the subframe from the body, as mine had never been out before. I used the Mini jack to lift the body each side...then the weight of the subframe made it 'fall out'. Then my wife and I lifted the body up and walked it back out of the way.

How much room do you need above the car to get the motor out ? I've got a ceiling of 2.1m less 280mm for the beams then if I use the hand winch I've used elsewhere in the past I'll be lucky to have a metre to work with

You need the height of the motor/gearbox + your hand winch, and add 100mm over front panel to allow for motor tilt- don't forget the front suspension will lift to top of travel when you lift the motor..

plus the depth of the engine bay behind the car to roll it back out of the way
