G'day,

I've searched through my workshop manuals and on here but I can't find how often the tapetts need adjusting. I seem to recall reading it somewhere but can't lay my hands on it now.

Minnie has an 850 that was fully rebuilt when it had 40,350 miles on the clock. I retorqued the head and checked the tapetts at 40,749. It's now done 44,864 so about 4,100 miles since the last check.

How often do you blokes check yours?

Thanks Rocky

When they remind me to, that is when I hear them tapping.

The handbook (AKD3886G) says:
Tappets 6000 miles or 6 months
Oil change 6000 miles or 6 months
Grease suspension 3000 miles or 3 months

Reminds me I need to check mine…
These days it’s recommended to change brake fluid every 2 years too

Also coolant which can become alkaline which attacks alloy components. Perhaps every 12 to 18 months.

Thanks Dave and Timmy.

As for the coolant, I was advised by a mini specialist who tuned the motor when I first got it on the road to use Penrite 10/10ths race coolant. It's a red one instead of the common green glycol based ones. On their info sheet, they claim it lasts 3 to 5 years. Would this still go alkaline?

You can test the coolant with the little test strips

Never mix the red/orange organic acid (OAT) coolants with the green ones, it will congeal and clog up your cooling system. Also be aware that OAT coolants are bad for silicone hoses if you are using them.

Thanks for the info on mixing coolants Jaybee. I had heard that you couldn't mix them but didn't know why. The engine was just re built so no previous coolant in it all and I'll stick with the 10/10ths stuff.

As for the tapetts, I thought I'd check them as I was doing a service and found a couple were a tad tight. Nothing too drastic and I'm guessing maybe 10 thou whereas I've been using 12 thou.

All set now for another 6,000 miles of enjoying Minnie.

Sounds like it is all sorted as you said. Just some of my thoughts on the 10/10ths coolant, for clarification.

It(penrite 10/10ths) is red but it is a hybrid coolant not exactly the same as OATS but good advice above in not to mix coolants and to give a good flush if changing coolants.

The Glycol type test strips do not give accurate readings with this stuff..... I don't know if OAT type strips exist, but i would be wary of results also.

and Finally , i am not sure of the anti freeze capacity of 10/10th? , its blurb is all about getting rid of heat, I would think it pretty safe in Australian climates but do your own diligence.
