Hi guys I want to replace the 1/4 vent window handle & spring on my windup window mini. Can anybody give me some advice on how to remove the small locating drive pin on the existing handle. Cheers

Are the 1/4 vent widows the reason the Aussie Minis never got the dash mounted swivel vents that the UK made Minis did? Did the last of the Aus made Minis (1275 LS) have dash vents?

Either a drill bit of the right size or a burr in a Dremel like tool to grind the old pin away. If you're not confident it'd be better to track down someone who is. If you go to seriously off track you'll wreck the handle.

I had the exact conversation with John Schmidt at MKO a few months ago. While the spring and the pin are available New Old Stock, no-one present knew how to remove the old pin as it is steel, not brass. Drilling it will almost never work as the drill bit will wander into the softer material (mirzak).
What improvement will be achieved by this operation is not clear.

It was badly worn so wriggling it about with some WD40 it fell off. I was then able to get it out with a small drive punch. I have since drilled it out to make it circular & made a small neoprene bush that is a snug fit. It is now very firm & as new,

Somewhat of a thread revival, but nice to keep it all in one thread. Have there been any development in a removal technique for these handles yet, or is it still a case of replace the unit when necessary? I think a rotary tool with a small burr and a steady hand may be the best option, just to erode the pin enough to get the handle off.

Am I correct in the assumption that the pin is located through the alloy on one side and into the steel shaft only, or does it pass through the whole of the steel shaft and into the alloy on the other side?

I have seen a photograph of one which had a brass pin, but this could be aftermarket, mine are steel and one handle is broken, the other has all of the play so they have to come off one way or another, just trying to give myself the best chance and to not break the glass.

Maybe 'winabbey' has a technical drawing to help.

The pin goes through the handle and then into a hole in the other side of the handle, but not all the way through. The pin sits in the groove in the stub attached to the quarter vent frame which holds the handle in place.

Carefully drilling the pin to remove it seems the best option.

Handles have been unavailable separately for some time. A new pin and spring are available.

Thank you for the information, however I am still a little muddled. I believed the pin passes through one wall of the handle, and sits against the groove on the shaft, which retains the handle (against the spring). Is this correct?

I have not dismantled it yet, but reading your intial sentence, is reads as though the pin passes through the handle, through the shaft and into a recess on the opposite wall of the handle, but unless the shaft rotates I cannot see how that would work as it would be fixed (unless it is slotted)?

I have attached the only photograph I can find of the shaft, I appreciate it will be obvious once you have dismantled one, but this is my first and I do not wish to break it. It looks like it is brazed on, presumably fixed, so the pin would sit in the groove as suspected.

The pin is off-centre, so passes through the slot in the stub and into the other side of the handle. This lets the handle rotate.

Thank you for your response, I think the penny has dropped for me, is the photo below a fair representation of how the pin is fitted? My opening is quite corroded so it is not easy to tell, but I think the hole is elongated which would confirm the above.

Just posting some photos for anyone else searching in the future. Granted this is a similar window handle, but the concept is the same except the "point" of the wooden pick would not pass through the alloy.
