I looked into the cheap boosters as my original VH44 had failed. After talking to a few repair places, most said to stay away from the copies as once they failed you had to throw them away - they can't be repaired.

I ended off buying a new one from Minisport - https://minisport.com.au/mini-moke-vh44 ... -pbr-brand. Yes it was $500, but given it's a safety related item I didn't want to take any shortcuts.

I saw this as better option compared to the $700 odd people are quoting to rebuild a 40 year old booster, or risk the dodgy knock off. I know originality is important to people, but my van is far from original so went down this path.

Related - I have an old VH44 for sale if someone wants one, could probably use a rebuild kit as I think some of the seals etc are gone.

My first priority is getting the disc brakes on the car and seeing if I even want to fit a booster. I haven't driven a disc car without a booster, so I'm keeping my options open and these came up for sale last week.

As far as I can see these are your options:
A: buy a brand new genuine PBR unit
B: buy a reconditioned unit or have mine reconditioned
C: buy a kit and do it myself if it's all in good condition
D: buy a cheap ebay unit and cross my fingers

I haven't seen any prices as high as $700 for exchange units. These are the couple I could find online if you have one in exchange. Worth mentioning I got 2 x units for less than $100, so even using one for an exchange unit has saved me money.

$369

$392

$195 at 2014 prices

I came across this company while Googling, although mainly drum brake versions of the VH44. They may do the VH44J. At least there's an indication of prices.

I bought a reconditioned unit from the guy on the Gold Coast on an exchange basis. Great bloke, terrific service. From memory the price was under $400
