Looks like a PO was a bit heavy handed and stripped the sump plug
What is the best fix, helicoil or adapter bush.

Adaptor bush. Because trying to helicoil it dead square to the washer surface is so hard to do.
Whereas it can be tapped and an insert fitted in the car if necessary.
You can also get tapered sump plugs for Minis which don't need a copper washer.

I guess just a bsp plug would be good too, tapered plug with some thread tape on it. you could also fit the magnet in it too.

Right choice there. I have one of Kev's adapters to cure the crack leak where someone had bashed it right on the sump plug. It is so easy to maintain a good square face on the adapter compared to the alloy of the case. Mine has never leaked again in 12 years.

If there was a demand for these adaptors I'd get my mate to churn a heap out on his auto lathe. But I think I've only made 5 or 6 in the last 15 years. Not a money spinner.

Should start a post as I would like one or two don't even know the condition of mine but think it is good idea once gear box is stripped down and once I get body work done.

Im interested .
I have the 1300 leaking at the plug . The PO has done exactly that and munted a helicoil - slightly off and the washer doesnt sit flat .
The thread is standard .... would the adaptor work in this scenario ?

No. The outside thread is 3/4 UNF and the sump must be drilled and tapped. Can be done in the car if on a hoist. Put grease on the drill and tap to hold the swarf.
When finished and adaptor and plug fitted, pour 4 L of cheap oil or your last dump of sump oil in. Drain it out and it'll bring any remaining alloy swarf.

Drill size for the 3/4" unf tap is 17.5mm. 11/16" works too.
Mine has had the shank turned down to 1/2".

Not sure what diameter the outside of your 5/8 helicoil is. Screw it out a bit and measure before drilling.

The simple brilliance of this design is that it doesn't really matter how square the 3/4UNF thread is to the sump face, because that bit is sealed by the thread sealer. The sump plug is always guaranteed a square face on the adapter for the washer to seal against. This is why it will never leak.

Kev, if it is not a money spinner, maybe we can throw a drawing into a How To as an open source design. Then anyone anywhere with a lathe can knock one out to fix their pride and joy.

Ignore where it says `copper washer to seal'. No need, it's Loctited in.
Also, the title block says 1275. This mod works on any Mini box.
I can't edit this, I'm retired and now CAD illiterate.

Also, hexagonal bar is better than round to tighten it up. I used hex on the last couple.
