I have just answered some emails on Panel Adhesive ,FYI you will need to purchase the adhesive from a body paint supplier,The adhesive comes in 2 cartridges and they mix through a special mixing tube they then come through the tube fully mixed 50 50.Also the adhesive must have the micro glass beads in the adhesive to stop all the adhesive being compressed out of the joint when clamping.Fully read the instructions for use. Probably there are not many panels on a mini where you can use the adhesive it is also not cheap.

I wonder if this would be a good idea for putting the cover strips on the body instead of using the clips that scrape the paint off when installed. Sika would work but this sounds like it would be a better option

If you’re a Sydneysider, the Waratah train interiors are bonded to the stainless steel body with Sika 252.
Aluminium, stainless steel, glass, fibreglass, painted and powder coated part are all bonded with Sika 252.
We use so much of the stuff I wish I’d bought shares in the company years ago

I used an American brand called SEM 39747 panel adhesive to attach the cover strips to the external seams without the clips and also the drip rails under the gutters.
SEM is a 2 pack that needs a mixing gun too but at over $200, I used used a wooden ruler to push out equal ratios and mixed them by spatula.
The other advantage is the glue acts as a filler and prevents water getting into the seam. It cleans up with thinners while setting or can be sanded off easily after setting.

The first time that I used the bonding material was about 20 years ago.I replaced a Holden Ute turrent .I also did test pieces of metal to show my students and the rep from the supplier. Using a hammer and chisel to cut the test pieces I was surprised how good the bond was I had to chisel through some of the metal to break the bond. As I am a belt and bracers man I still MIG tack the 4 corners about 8mm tacks. As Bill said the sealer completely seals the lap join. The correct sealer meets OEM standards. Insurance companies want the car repaired inline with production standards for that make of vehicle.
