Hi all
Having some issues with rebuilt 1275 (1100s) engine. Got an annoying vibration worst at 2000rpm reving stationary in neutral. New engine mounts and rubber stabilizer bushes. Lightened flywheel. Factory harmonic balancer. All new ignition system and 45 weber. Good compression 155psi all 4.
Any advice much appreciated.
Cheers Rick

Was the flywheel and clutch assembly balanced after it was lightened?

Not sure. I purchased the engine already built (but not started) from a deceased estate. Can see through the starter hole that it is lightened with round holes cut out.

It may be a case of start to replace one item at a time.
Is there any way out there (tool or technique) to check or pinpoint something like this??? I've never heard of anything but I'd love to know.

You could try fitting a standard flywheel and clutch setup first...if it runs smooth...go get the lightened flywheel/clutch assy balanced

I don't know what type of vibration it is but maybe exhaust touching the body?

Yeah thanks I was thinking that. I don't have one though and not easy to find online. I will cry if I have to pull this engine again. Maybe I could pull the flywheel off with engine in situ.

Hi TK
The whole car is a full resto. Exhaust is brand new maniflow 1 7/8 twin box and doesn't touch anywhere but it does have brand new very stiff mounts. I will undo these mounts and see how I go. The remote shifter box mount is new too and pretty hard. The vibration peaks at 2000rpm
and reduces as the revs climb.

I cant find anyone locally that will balance the flywheel & clutch by themselves. They only balance whole assembly incl crank?

Send to Graham Russell he has a balanced crank he keeps for this purpose.
Otherwise, just fit it to any crank to spin it up, check its balance first.

Yeah thanks, that sounds like a plan.
Wonder what GR would charge for that? I will pull the flywheel off this weekend and contact him.

cheers
Rick

Exhaust fouling would be a clanking, tapping, rattling, ticking (if a manifold gasket leak) etc rather than a vibration...

I have the same. 1100S - but +0.040” (1310). Vibrates like a bastard between 1800 and 2200 (edit). Below that or over, it’s ok. At 3000+rpm it’s smooth as. At 4200 you wouldn’t know the engine was running! Big bore harmonics?

I have read (GR?, Calver?) that the 1098 with its long stroke and its relatively lightweight pistons was not happy at revs (wait for the pile-on! )

Morris 1100s engine is a 1275. Mine is 1293. 20 thou over I think. Yeah I have heard a lot about the large journal crank harmonics. This one is pretty bad though, maybe the light flywheel makes it worse?. I have another mini with a 1275LS engine so basically the same thing and it is not too bad. It doesn't have a harmonic balancer either. I will get the flywheel balanced I reckon , for piece of mind.
