Does anyone still stock the better quality old school variety ???

Both the Timken and SKF flat ones have been obsolete for years, and old stock anywhere seem to be gone now.

It is possible to make a hardened flat faced cup to go over the later bearing. GR has tried this on some race cars.

I run an orange dot diaphragm with the later bearing (an RHP). It's been in for over 20,000 miles and still good.
But check the thrust plate on the diaphragm is not soft (some were a few years ago) or not running true ( a common problem). It is possible to take the spring out of a new cover and fit it to an earlier one that isn't made crooked.

there *must* be a similar flat faced thrust bearing out there that we can press a sleeve into, or machine the bearing carrier down to fit

Thrust plate on grey diaphram marks easy as with a little needle file .Not good Pull the old school one out the 998 and use the hardened one.

The other clutch part that is rubbish these days is the cheap release bearing plunger.
It is free machining steel and very soft. Can't be hardened.
Wears fast where the clutch arm sits.
I have put hardened steel bushes in a few new ones. Should last like an original.

Do they wear on the cylindrical bit or only where the clutch lever seats .The hardened bush is a great solution.Might try and get a good old one from mini wreckers

Most wear is inside where the ball sits.
The trouble with getting old SH ones is they are worn in there too, but you can't drill them out readily because they are over 50HRC Rockwell hardness. You could anneal it by heating red hot for 5 mins then cooling slowly... But it's less hassle to buy a new soft one and drill it for a bush.
