7.5" Cooper S Front Right:

Passenger side slid out perfectly, this drivers side one is giving me some grief!

Have removed the caliper, disc, tie rod and ball joints from the hub, but now trying to remove the hub from the axle it doesn't want to budge, any tips for how to get this off with basic tools?

Am guessing I may need to remove the driveshaft with the hub still attached and take the whole lot to hang in the vice so I can try to whack the end of the axle down and out of the hub?

Passenger side slid out perfectly

I'd give the end of the CV a whack with a block of wood

As in, try to hit the threaded end of the axle toward the engine to set it free?

I did try this, but didn't want to go to crazy.

yeah, hold a block of wood on the threaded end (put the nut on a few turns) and then whack it

or pull the whole upright out with driveshaft... but it'll be the same, you need to give the CV a whack to release it

Is there much chance of damaging the cv doing this?

as long as you don't damage the thread... I doubt you'll abuse it much more than lugging a car around does... but they're cheap enough if you do hurt it

the conical split washer is out?

Yes, washer, drive flange and rotor are all off.

That is a fair point I guess, I might have another more enthusiastic go at it before taking the driveshaft out to try separating them on the bench. Not sure why, but the drivers side is giving me a lot more trouble than the passenger side, two of the screws that secure the drive flange to the rotor seem to be seized and the drive flange itself was very difficult to remove from the hub.

I had one like this recently. It had been parked for years and water got in. Hitting it didn't work so I took it to GR and he pressed it out. The CV was toasted.

Have I got this right? you have the disc and drive flange off the hub and CV? but the shaft is seized in the hub? What it's seized on is the bearings, I think you will find that by the time you get the hub off, the bearings and CV are going to be toast. I'd get replacements in...............
But yes you can place a block of HARD wood not pine over the threads and hit it as hard as you like with a heavy hammer use a dead blow technique ie do not let the hammer bounce back drive it through.

Could you apply a flame (such as MAP burner) to the hub?

Correct.

I doubt it would help, the shaft would be fused to the bearing, I don't see that heating the hub would make much difference.

replace the bearings and cv, they're not very expensive. pull the driveshaft and hub from the car and whack the cv out from the front of the hub.

Another quick question, under normal circumstances, does the driveshaft just slide out of the inboard hardy spicer coupler or would you need to undo the 4 bolts and remove the coupler from the shaft with a press?

Thought that should be the case, looks like I have a lot of problems with things fusing together on this side of the car!
