What is the correct CV inner joint setup for the Mk1 Cooper S?

My car looks like it has standard universal joints like: http://www.classicmotoring.net.au/cmos/ ... ts_id=1645

But then I read the description and it states "Except for Cooper S"

Hardy Spicer joints were an option on early Cooper S not Std fitment. Their were Cooper S specific doughnuts Originally but were superseded to one type.

The ones you linked are an aftermarket replacement for the original rubber cross joints.

Thanks for the quick reply, that makes me feel a bit better, I was starting to think it was for sure meant to have the hardy spicer units and had been converted for what ever reason.

A somewhat embarrassing question now... are the universal joints supposed to have a rubber boot to protect them?

Yes I realize that, but in the description for either it states "Except Cooper S"

I believe they went to Hardy Spicer in 1966. Std not optional.
Shaft splines are the same so either fits.

Early ..ie 63/64 etc Cooper Ss (UK built cars) had the "normal" Mini rubber cross type joint.

The original link is for the aftermarket item that could be used as a direct replacement for the standard (i.e. factory) rubber joint.

Later (don't know exact changeover point) - but I think including Aus built Ss used the metal Hardy Spicer joint.... and its associated fittings.

The link is to an Australian company that doesn't seem to appreciate that their comment is not completely correct...but may be so for Aus built cars.

Cheers, Ian

Oh :( Looks like my car got changed over at some stage then.

Should the rubber X style uni joints still have a boot to protect them?

I believe none of the uni joints ever had a protector boot, only the CV joint.

I also thought all Australian assembled Cooper S had the Hardie Spicer joint, not the rubber uni, but happy to be corrected.

In case it helps here's the relevant pages from the Mini parts catalogue PUB1012.

I wonder what Uni joints the S ran at Bathurst in '66?

I asked the previous owner of my car (he bought it new) and he says it has not been changed, that's how he got it new (with the rubber joint).

Wonder what the story is with my car (46388)?

It does seem very late to have rubber unis. I think you would be hard pressed to find another 1967 car with rubber unis.

My first S, registered in July 66 - car YKG2S2 1090 - engine No 9FSaY 39922, had the rubber inner unis and I had to replace the LH one several times over the 60K+kms that I had the car.
It was a real PIA job to replace it without splitting the front suspension ball joints and removing the drive shaft.
These also had the small vertical oil cooler and, IIRC, blue coloured displacers.
I'm not sure but I think the 66 Bathurst cars used the Hardy Spicer inner unis and the large horizontal oil cooler.
