Hi guys,

I'm just about to replace the fuel tank but was just wondering if there is an easy way to test the fuel sender unit whilst out of the car? I just want to make sure it works before going to the hassle of installing it.

I believe (and could definitely be wrong) that they measure fuel by inceased/decrased resistance as the tank is filled? So I thought perhaps measuring resistance over the 2terminals whilst filling the tank would test if it is working?

I apologize if this is completely wrong, but appreciate the feedback :)

That is pretty much correct - the sender is just a variable resistor.

There may a post on ausmini from a few years ago with values...

Take the sender out of the tank , connect the two wires to it. Turn the Key on and hold it with float lever at lower most. It should read empty. Lift the float about quarter of the sweep and it should read around a quarter. Do the same with half, Three quarters and full. Give it time to rise. They are pretty slow to respond. When you manually connect the two wires together the gauge should go to full. Be aware that the early Minis worked the other way round. Wires together they read empty.

And early gauges run on 12V whereas the later ones changed to 10....

While you've got it out, wack a cable tie to hold it at full. Then you'll never run out of fuel.

Test it with an analog multimeter out of the tank
This is so you can pick up ripples in the reading that may indicate wear.
These are not apparent with a digital multimeter
The readings are 250 ohm @ Empty 70 @ 1/2 and 19 @ full
