I replaced an RHP 1st motion shaft bearing recently, and the new one (RHP box, made in Germany) was looser than the old (RHP, made in UK).
I thought only the Chinese could make ball bearings with end float when new..! Apparently not so, unless this one was a knockoff.

Gee Gundy, never done a gearbox before, not doing it again, gutsy I say. Should be left to the experts, but good on you for having a go.

Mate where do you get this comment from
I am a Fitter and Turner by trade and have been working on cars and motorcycles for 40 years
Have rebuilt engines and gearboxes of all sorts over the years
Rebuilt stuff more complicated than a Mini Gearbox
And i only do things once, that is i do it right the first time

My main work has been the restoration of Vintage Indian Motorcycles
I do everything in house including cylinder boring and honing to Alloy welding, etc

Sorry there Gundy, I think you are misinterpreting what I have said. I only assumed that with all the questions that you were asking, it appeared that you are unsure of what goes on with a mini gearbox. And as I have said, good on you for having a go, and going by the pictures of that real neat bike engine, that gearbox is in good hands. I'm all for someone having a go.
My humble appologies your good sir. Lol.

Its OK
You just read too much into my post
I asked 1 question
I didn't ask how to rebuild this gearbox
And now you will all know a bit more about myself and my abilities.
I have my own small engineering workshop at home
I bought my lathe in 1984 1 year after i finished my apprenticeship
And have gathered a lot more machines since.
Being a Maintenance Fitter for 38 years and my first car was a Mini at age 14
At 14 i pulled the whole front end out took all the suspension off and had the sub frame powder coated and put it all back together
Also i like to ask questions on this forum as a way to start a conversation and to get others to talk
I am sure there are a lot of Lurkers here that enjoy reading the posts

Nice donk Gundy :D

I would be interested in your take on the hit and miss supply of replacement parts these days. You can buy a Timken in a Timken box that is inferior and liable to fail. I tend to stick with suppliers who consistently provide good quality stuff. But anyone can be caught out by the "knock offs" out there...

Cheers, Mick (ex-licorice framed, jap-crap rider)

PS you may be interested in this lot (Note: Collectors claim to the first TT in Oz appears to be a little dicey)

Possibly the "first" TT in Oz??

My Pet hate is getting so called Best Quality parts only to find out they are rubbish
The Indian Motorcycle Restoration scene was like this 15-20 years ago
Until people demanded better parts
So i feel its better to ask a question here to sound out who has had good or bad experiences with parts etc
Then it up to ones self to decide which path to take
I had several rebuilt Indian engines fail after 1000 miles due to the parts supplier selling inferior piston rings and claiming they were Hastings rings
They wouldn't cough up for the repairs either
So that why i am cautious

Went to fit a new 1-2 selector fork to a Mk2 S box today. It fits the gear nice, out of the box. Unfortunately the selector shaft hole is too low by .008" so it binds on assembly. Can't turn the gear.
Time to take it back...

Presumably not an OEM fork. Yet another example of shoddy spares manufacturing mate?

After the post about your qualifications I hesitate to write this! but here goes. After looking at that layshaft and you saying you will of course replace it. make sure you take a good look at the laygear as well usually by the time there that bad the bearing surface of the gear will be stuffed as well! Just a thought........................

Edit..........I see now those pictures were of Aarons box not yours!

OEM parts are disappearing. This one isn't marked Mowog but seems well made. Except for a dimension error.
I could remachine it, but shouldn't need to do this.
Hoping it's just a one off problem.

[edit] I exchanged this selector fork for another, and that measured fine. Supplier is returning the crook one for credit.
