I know its a long shot but does anyone have a picture of a simplex timimg chain both sides.

I only seem to have duplex ones.

Yes, I have just replaced mine. Will send you a photo tomorrow.
Is the bit you found on your sump hollow? I just measured a link in the chain I have and it was 6.25 mm diameter - what is the diameter of your bit?

yes it may have been hollow

my part measures 3.25mm

the ones on my duplex chain measure 3.55mm

Image of timing chain link as requested - the pin that does through the roller is about 3.2 mm diameter and is dimpled on each end - might be the bit you found. The roller is larger (6.4 mm roughly)

The pin is not stepped on the end - after installing in the link, it looks like it has been punched in the centre to flare it out slightly yo hold it in place

I can send you my old chain if you want otherwise it's going in the bin - my new chain cost me just $10 so it may be just as cheap to buy a new one to compare.

If you think it's a timing chain pin, don't run your engine because the timing chain could break and that would be a disaster.

This is what happened to am MGF which broke its timing belt - yes, that's a valve embedded in the top of the piston
