Ok guys and gals, i have some 7x13 wheels for my mini when i finally finish it. Problem is while i have some fairly chunky discs and hubs for the front and inch wide stepped drums on the rear, its not wide enough for me. I dont necessarily want to go as far as group 5 or miglia arches, but i want my mini wider than group 2s. Im just wondering, seeing as spacers are illegal in queensland and i believe australia (correct me if im wrong), i am at a loss as to ways i can make my car wider. Short of putting mass amounts of camber on it and ruining the ride, i dont know what to do. Just wanting to see if anyone has suggestions or what others have done to make their minis wider?

Cheers in advance, Phil.

I remember something I read on 16v mini or the mini forum, there were several options;

Some used MGF? trailing arms which are offset further out apparently.

others were making their own arms (generally for coilovers)

Others had widened the subframe or constructed a new wider subframe.

Below is another option they use the standard trailing arm and frame but extend the stud and install a spacer on the arm.
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34251&highlight=rear+trailing+arms

I'd all of these options in Australia would require engineering approval (significantly wider wheels need approval) so the best place to start might be by talking to an engineer.

Hmmm i was hoping to avoid that, seems i have no choice i suppose. Im just curious because ive seen wide minis out and about and unless theyre all illegal, there has to be something theyre doing to make it wider...

13x7 wheels with the brake combo you have is barely legal / possible not as is - in Aus we have a regulation on the width of the cars allowable track increase from standard. Next stage would be to find 13x8 wheels but after that nothing is legal / engineerable.

Can't compare to overseas cars - they don't work to our regulations.

Im not comparing to overseas cars and i know my wheels are legal. Seeing several minis at shows with group 5 and miglia arches that are road legal gets me wondering how they did it. I wasnt thinking about it at that point so i didnt ask, ill have to this year...

Even so, i dont want 13x8 wheels. The only reason i have 13s is because the calipers are so big. 7 inches wide because i may aswell, what with the wheels already being so big. I imagine its going to be a bit difficult to turn at low speeds as is with these, i definitely wouldnt want to go bigger. I may end up changing the discs and calipers and switching to 12s or 10s at a later date purely because this is a daily, not a track day monster.

It's NSW but the regs are becoming more national, the pdf it'self says RTA but it's linked from the RMS(NSW reg) site:

I run 13x7s and quite wide flares.
Perhaps you need to look at the offset of your rims?

Hmmm, theyre standard ultralites. Ive test fitted them and it seems like it only would stick out by about an inch and a half. Maybe its me but it doesnt seem like much. I dont want to go and buy the wrong flares you see. Ill have to test fit a few, see which ones ill need...thanks all the same guys.
