You probably know there are different size battery terminal lugs. Did you buy the correct size for your application?

Yes and yes. I was talking about bending them 1mm wider so I could get it down the thermal more. It would even budge 0.5mm before snapping. The cheap Chinese ones are some sort of cast metal and it ain't bendy

Ive done similar previously but recently discovered that there is a slight taper to them. I forget how i discovered it but one way around it was too tight and the other way it was a nice snug fit.

Welded up a damaged 940 head I was given. It had dropped a valve, trashed the exhaust insert, and the inlet seat too.
I used 100% nickel electrode to repair the inlet seat and fill the exhaust seat recess.
If it passes crack testing we will cut seats in the nickel. No insert.

I was at Graham Russell's place a few weeks back and he was showing
me the new welding rods he uses to repair the heads, very impressive!
are they the same rods you use Kev? Graham said the rods he uses are
98% Nickle.

Yes John the same rods, Cigweld Castcraft 100. I bought a few off Graham.
Can get in a handipack from Masters for $89. Contains 2.5 and 3.2mm electrodes. Not at Bunnings.
Can also get bigger packs from welding suppliers, but cost a fortune.

It would be great if you also did a write up on the repair. eg did you preheat, tig / Arc. etc
Its getting harder to find good heads these days need to keep our options open

Installed a $50 Gumtree special gemini starter motor. Smiled. Took him for a drive then came home and started getting ready for the engine to come out...

The 850 dressed up as an Nb racer wouldn't idle or rev. I couldn't get it to change gear properly and the idle revs dropped when the clutch pedal was pressed. I had tried to set the timing but couldn't see any timing marks on the lightened flywheel though the wok hole.

So out came the engine and I spit it from the box. I found a fair few metric bolts in it, several striped threads and a few finger tight ones too. I did find timing marks so the timing must have been WAY out! The clutch spring was far from flat and the posts had unnecessary spacers so they came out. Once I have checked the thrust bearings I will put this engine onto the box Matt Read rebuilt for me. I will have to change the dizzy and carb I expect. I will need a thermostat housing because all the ones I have are really pitted inside.

Turns out the 850 has heaps of really good parts that have been assembled quite poorly.

Considering I haven't really touched her since my children were born 8 or so years ago, Lillee didn't see what was coming in the past few weeks! My eldest is coming along to Rylstone this year as my co driver so I suddenly have the urge to recheck everything from a safety point of view. Gone are the cowboy mechanics of yesteryear, now that my princess is involved!

Lillee's Preparation and "mini" overhaul for 2016 Rylstone Classic

New Mini rear drum brake adjust screws and wedges - TRANSFORMED the brakes!!! Oh my goodness. Recommended
New EBC Green Stuff Pads - Twice through Galston Gorge last year settled this decision ahead of time. Black stuffs are great but just can't keep up
New Sump Plug - Turns out the old one aint that bad so intead...
New Sump Plug Copper Washer - Fixed minor leaking of sump plug for good. Purchased several so should last several oil changes
New rear vision mirror - Didn't survive storage in the garage next to the kids bikes and scooters. Nice Chevy ones $70 from ebay
New Optima Yellow Top D34 750 CCA Deep Cycle dual purpose Battery - FYI It's the biggest baddest thing that will fit in the mini battery box, will turn over gemini starter for 3 hours non stop
New battery tie down - Ran her without tie downs for years... bad idea
New battery terminal lugs - Seriously stay away from el cheapo terminals. Ended up binning all the new ones and went with cleaned 1969 components...
New Battery terminal covers - yes safety first people
New Narva master battery isolator - Last year the cold weather got the better of the turn key type isolator. Decided this year to go with heavy duty marine isolator
New Accuspark Stealth Black Box - Lillee has moved into the "i" age!! Now has a USB plug and programmable advance! What a revelation!
New GT40 Coil - Turns out it was a dud, returning it and maybe will buy a Pertronix instead, not sure yet
New NGK BP5ES spark plugs - hadn't been changed in 8 years
New Wheel nuts - For some reason some of my front wheel nuts were not quite 19mm or 3/4 inches... needed two tools to change tyres
New CTEK trickle charger - if it's good enough for Jay Leno, it's good enough for me
New hydrolastic pump - Been meaning to make myself one of these for 10 years, finally did it and so glad I did!
New gear knob - bling bling
New Ignition switch - 47 years, I think it's time to retire it and replace it with a new one. I hope the new one lasts 4.7 years let alone 47...
New Ground Strap - again old one gave 47 years of service

Maintenance:
Bleed Brakes
Rotate Tyres
Top up Clutch Fluid
Top up Coolant
Washed Air filter
Change Oil filter
Change Oil Castrol Edge 25W50 - had it lying around, might as well use it. Best smelling oil ever made
Pumped Hydrolastic
Fixed rear seatbelt issue
Greased ball joints
Checked wheel bearings
Adjust tappets
Cleaned up fuse box
Did loads and loads and loads of rewiring and cleaning up of wires

All there is left to do is to give her a really really good clean and we are ready to hit Rylstone!

Yeah ahaha I didn't just throw it all on in one sitting, it was over several weeks. Have been for several test drives along the way. I need to go for a long fang at some point to properly bed in the brakes before the big weekend.

Best excuse to spend money on your mini in the name of safety. I recently need new seat belts in the back. Wasn't an issue with the finance director once the kids need to go in the back.
