Post subject:  Application of carpet and sound deadenning
Hey guys,

This weekend I plan to rip out the old carpet and install new carpet. I want to buy carpet and use the old one as a template to cut out what I need. Under the carpet I want to install good sound insulating material as the old stuff is just plain tired.

What do I use to hold all of it down? Someone was implying that I should use liquid nails :?

should I be attaching it using pop rivetted button thingies? or should I just glue it onto the floor? How did the carpet stay down on factory carpetted cars?

Also what should I use to paint the floor with? i was thinking black kill rust if i am going to glue carpet over it anyway...

Velcro sound like a good idea on the walls specialy int he feet wells. This will help if you need to get to the Steering Rack

Velcro can be dots or dtrips and can be purchased from Penfolds , Office Works or may be from a news agent.

What about the sound deadening. I have used Airconditioner Insulation. Heavy but good

i did my interior stripped the paint, primed, hand painted a good thick layer of paint and primer so no water/rust

i bought my ready made carpet, cut left over carpet and used that stuff for insulation on the floor.

the wheel walls, box section and side curtains i just used 'Selleys glue' in a tin, heat/water resistant, directly on readymade carpet
mini is kept in house garage, no plans on ripping it out soon

original layers on walls:
metal
prime
paint
glue
hessian (that shitty dusty brown potato sack stuff)
glue
rubber mat

original layers on floor/box section:
metal
prime
paint
glue
rubber mat

this is what i noticed when ripping everything out. check my site maybe it will give you a little idea on what im talking about

velcro wont be useful on floor - too weak, gets tired
velcro strips on box section, wheel walls should work. it comes in a roll like duct tape and you stick it on both sides. im not sure about sticking velcro on carpet, maybe you could handstitch it onto the carpet

Did you spray the interior or brush it?

Clarke rubber sell this 10mm and 20mm rubber sound insulation for cars, it's lightweight at approx $25 per metre (1m wide) for the 10mm and double for the 20mm, which means you need like 3 metres. Looks good as it is rubber (water resistant) and mildly heat resistant too, and is designed to go under carpet. Anyone used this tuff before?? Sounds ideal...

How much carpet do you estimate to cover the whole mini floor?

I thought the carpet on the floor was bolted under the front seat mounings, accelerator pedal bracket and over the hooks for the heater (clubman heater if installed)

)Naah I'm not into concourse restore for interior... good light stuff is all i need... Don't get me wrong, I still want it nice inside, just doesn't have to be original :wink:

glue or screws/hooks?? which is it? I think glue sounds more permanent and will last longer (ie. Don't plan to change carpet for next 10 years :wink: )

i brushed my interior with a paint brush and a little rollerbrush (holes very fine and gave a great finish - its not as good as a spray but you wouldnt notice unless it was pointed out. theres a pic of the rear section that i did with a roller brush)

i also used a heck of alot of paint thinner which helped even everything out but made the paint flossy as you roller brush. the key is to have a generous amount of paint to avoid the stringy-ness.

originally, there were buttons and little screws&washer holding the rubber mats onto the floor - sorry, error in my last post.
only the walls and box secion were glued (wheel walls with the hessian)
the floor carpet had little clip buttons (like on clothes but bigger) on the floor edges to clip the rubber mats in. no insulation on floor

the plate that holds the accelerator pedal in place was also put over the mats, so that acts as a mat holder. i cut my carpet to fit over it

i dont think that stuff is felt (ebay item). felt is fine wool, soft.
that stuff looks like potato sack stuff, rough, similar to the stuff found as old firewall cover, headlining insulation that begins to break down within 5 years into an allergic liability

Thanks for the info, I will look into it. I might put in the buttons and screws as I think the holes are already there...
