Post subject:  Rebuilding a 1275

Hey,
Soon to be starting on rebuilding my A+ engine, I need to look at what should be replaced whilst it's being done.
I don't know what the average milage of the engines that are imported over here is,
but I was considering a minimal bore increase, new pistons, cam (just thinking) and having the head converted for unleaded, though it will still run on high octane when finished. I'll also look at the condition of the bearings and decide what to do then (most likely replace), and rebuild with a new clutch, timing chain and electronic ignition.
Hopefully this should get me a smooth reliable engine.

What I haven't decided yet is how much work I want to do myself.
I don't really have the cash to dump the engine somewhere and say 'go for it', and although I wouldn't mind taking it all apart and putting back together, it's not like I've done it before and have been advised to go woth the pros to ensure a bearing isn't fitted backwards or something and completely stuff my engine after a few short miles.

Is what I have planned over the top, a good start or spot on to do, and what's recommended about who does the job?
Thanks.

That's a good start. I would add:
new oil pump,
regrind the crank (bet it needs it)
duplex timing chain kit
port the head a little while it's getting refurbished.

What clutch & flywheel are you running?

What about the gearbox.... is it a Metro one?
Never fit a new motor without at least stripping the box for a look. And cleaning out all the crud, which will otherwise find its way into your shiny new engine...

I dont know really, but I'm 99% sure it's all metro. Is that good?
What's the head port do?

are you sure you want to rebuild this thing on your own? What Doc means is to enlarge the intake and exhaust ports so the head breathes better. Might was well do it whil the head is off, worth it in terms of hp, trust me

How many extra ponys could you expect with a bit of a port and polish?

(1 or 2) or (10 or 20)?

Dunno much about Metro boxes except they have A+ gears and a Verto clutch (regarded by many as a POS), some (all?) are cable actuated.
Need some mods to work in a Mini, and you may want to change the diff ratio too..

As I said, don't assume it's good to go. Strip, check & clean it out!

Yeah, it looks like a heap of crap so I was going to completely strip it down and have it rebuilt.
I'll have to look into the clutch and what drive it has, I would like it so it doesn't
rev as high as 100 km/h. 3000 preferable.
What diff would I need, and is there any other mods needed to make that work?
