here is the situation,

an MG1100 engine with no side plates, has a breather off the rocker cover but it is still pressurising the sump (oil pushing up through the dip stick).

In order to fit a clutch casting breather to the clutch inspection cover ....you need a hole :!: ....this one has never been drilled!!! Removing the little cover exposes a tapered crater (without the hole!!)

So...how can this blind hole be opened without dropping a bunch of swarf in the clutch/flywheel cavity :?: Ideas very much appreciated :D

You can SLOWLY drill the hole packed with grease or similar to catch the swarf..but you will still get some in the clutch housing...so it's not recommended to do while in the car....engine out and apart jobie..

If you do it this way, do lots of oil changes...

Mick, that swarf goes down into the drop gears, not the flywheel cavity.. :x

I did mine that way in the car (used a 7/8" hole saw) but I don't recommend it. I was still getting aluminium swarf in the oil changes 4 changes later.
Worse.. if you don't drill it at the right angle you will bust into the clutch housing... then you've got a wet clutch! :cry:

You could put a breather on the fuel pump mounting hole, but beware- if you don't put a baffle across the opening the crank will chuck heaps of oil up it at high revs. As I found out... :shock:

MG1100 no side covers? so is that a A series 1275? If not just whack on a breather lifter cover.
As I've said you need at least three breathers on a 1275, (you might get away with two for a stock/mild 1275).
anyway I'd do the fuel pump thing. I use a modified breather from the drop gear case here.
or use a very large breather ala race car on the rocker cover.

OK confusion reigns....

the 1100 has been swapped with the 1100S that many times chasing oil leaks that we got out of kilter :oops:

Checks last night confirmed 1275 (Dohhh, no side plates!) ...and there is a hole under the clutch inspection cover.

So...breathing should be made easier by bolting a standard can off the clutch cover....that makes two breathers....

when does it become necessary to have three on a 1275 with twin carbies :?: after boring, camming and heading :D say :?:

I run a single breather on the 1310 (now 1360) with the PCV, no problems. If I take the PCV off and run to a bottle, I use 2- the clutch housing one, and one from the rocker cover.
As it doesn't spew oil anywhere at 7500+ around Wakefield Pk, I think this is adequate. :wink:

Penalurick has done this mod to his clutch housing....neat and elegant...rubber tube goes straight into one of the air cleaners on his twins.....

Yeah I am only running 1 breather from the tappet cover into the dellorto intake via a PCV just like Mini Haha, no Mayo, so far so good :wink: Idles well too :D

As I've recently changed to a 1275 head, I can no longer use the Side-plate cover breather easily.... (Fouls on the steady.. bugger)

I also have no hole in the clutch cover....

If i was to remove the side-plate one, replace with a solid side-plate, and open the rocker-cover one, would this suffice for an approx 100@flywheel 998 ?

I'm guessing not, and that i should just modify the side-plate one to fit.....

That said, i have VERY little blow-by with the two, so maybe one biggie would do the job ?

Hmmmmm its all rather confusing really... I need a new Guage "Crank-Case Pressure" .....

Make one to go on the old fuel pump flange, but BAFFLE IT!. Or it will chuck gobs of oil up there. I found this out...

:idea: Why not reshape the sidecover one, that's really the best spot for it.
