Help I was driving normally next minute the carbies splutter and start making louder then normal flutter sounds and I loose power when I get check it out to find my exhaust was loose (easy fix) but th car still running like a pig I remove the spark plugs and second from the left is wet with fuel I run the colortune to check I have spark on that cylider and I do Check the coil with a mulitimeter (not a great way I know) getting17.5 This morning on the way to work at a out 4500rpm on the freeway I dealt a flutter Before buying anothe coil which is olny a month old has anyone got any ideas |

If it's only one cylinder, wouldn't it be the lead or plug ? |

that was my guess so I swapped both and the wet plug didn't come back though it still ran like a dog After leaving it for a while idling plug wet again If I remove lead 2 and 3 the engine still runs Baddly but runs. If I remove 1 or 4 it dies If 2 or 3 are disconnected the engine runs badly telling me it using those cylinders the knock knock knock from the carbs is confusing me. wish I could record it could it be a valve ? I removed the rocket cover and could see anything obvious |

Maybe something simple like a crook lead but it does sound like a valve or head gasket. Either way, the head will have to come off. Have you done a recompression test ? |

Check the resistance of the plug and coil leads. If over 5K ohm I would bin them. When cheap leads get old the resistance goes up, they get internal breaks in the core. If buying new, get inductive core leads, not graphited string cheapy ones. I use Bosch, but Graham Russell has tailored to fit Mini sets using similar cable. |

Did you fit an electronic distributer? Have you checked all the HT leads and their connections including the coil? Plugs don't last forever these days...etc etc |

Plugs replaced I am running electronic ignition new leads new coil about a month old Why do you say exhaust ? It does have a leak at a join mid way down and it appeared at the same time |

Yeap it does I'll rip the head off and check I have a feeling the head gasket was iffi as I saw water marks down the front of the engine looking like it was coming from the head Does anyone have the torque settings for the head bolts? |

Head nuts on an S are 42ft/lb, but the small bolt near the thermostat is 25ft/lb. Before pulling the head, do a compression test. If you don't have a tester, crank it with plugs out and put yer thumb on the plug holes. If no pressure on 2 and 3, the gasket is blown between. If all feel equal I'd leave the head on it. |
