Hi everyone,

Just wondering - for those running a 45 Weber or Dellorto - does the S.U electric fuel pump give enough fuel to feed the Weber?

I've currently got this pump and don't really want to swap if I was going to go down this path.

Cheers
James

From a non expert and in the absence of any other answers yet, I was (car now stripped down for resto) running my 45DCOE13 with the original pump and didn't seem to have any problem.

I never had a problem running a 45 with the Cooper S std SU pump.

Depends on how much power you're making. At 120bhp my engine was sucking up the float bowl of the 45 Dellorto by 2nd gear. I think the difference was about 15-20hp loss. Totally noticeable after fix and worth it.

It's not so much the fuel pump size or output (although that's important too) but the biggest restriction is the pissy original 1/4 fuel line. Ideally you was 5/16 fuel line from boot to carb, what also want is large volume pump that can supply a constant 4psi (sidedraught optimum). Only way you can really do this is to use a higher psi pump and use a fuel pressure regulator.

I did all this 10yrs ago after throwing in the engine after dynoig at GR's. Drove it and thought hmm it's fast but it just seems to be lacking somewhat compared to other 120bhp cars that I drove. After fixing it by installing 5/16 lines, 8psi (from memory) pump and a Holley fuel regulator, all has been well since!

I have around 125HP at the crank, and still running the stock 1/4" fuel line. Never had a problem with fuel delivery, either on the dyno, on the road, or at Wakefield Pk track days. Pump is a square Facet with no regulator.

Just some further info .... ( i think 1/4 inch is fine but with conditions)

8 gallon per hour is about 32 litres per hour........ so to run faster than the pump is the equivalent of getting 3 kilometres per litre economy as opposed to the norm of about 10 kilo/litres at steady state driving...

On the track ( basically full blast) i think i get something like a litres per 2-3km at worst.... ( no speedo no fuel gauge but roughly)

But..... the needle and float must be big enough to refill quick enough or you could experience what Lillee is saying.... ( i think Size 2mm would be plenty for road and 2.25 or 2.5 is fine for track.

that was my problem when I first put the blower on - ~95bhp at the wheels using the standard 1/4" line and SU pump, at full noise it'd empty the float bowl very quickly. #1 restriction was the needle and seat - I got a high volume needle and seat and problem gone...

Thanks for that I've learnt something new today, so higher volume needle valve for Dellorto might be on the cards...

Edit just checked I think have a 250 needle valve and I should have at least 350 or 400

I had a 2.25 needle valve in my weber and it was too big. I had fuel splashing and it ran rich. Went down to a 1.75 and it fixed it.

I had a weber on from 1994-1997. It used a std SU fuel pump.

It needed a pressure regulator to stop the fuel pressure overcoming the needle valve - pretty sure it was set to 4psi. I also had a glass filter of the same brand - it was pretty cool as I could clean it.

Standard needle valve jet supplied in a genuine Dellorto DHLA service kit is 1.75. it is marked on the outside.
It is the mm hole size in the valve, not the needle diameter.
Unless running E85 or methanol you would not need bigger.

Just checked when we rebuilt the dellorto we took out 150. Will have to check what I have in there now when I pull it off. I'm guessing 250 which is the genuine rebuild kit standard
