Searching for something else & came across this. Looks like and auto-locker, same kinda thing the 4WD guys use. It ratchets when cornering but locks up under hard acceleration. These definitly change the vehicles handling characteristics. I think it would be very "interesting" in a FWD. Anyone driven one of these??? I can't see how it wouldn't understeer you off the road. EDIT: Oops, found another post on the same thing here ![]() |

The Phantom has a reputation for leaving nice shavings of metal in your gearbox ![]() |

There's a couple of blokes in Melbourne who have been making and installing a similar "Phantom Grip" type of diff mod into all sorts of cars. I've been running one in a Fiat 124 rally car for 8 years, a Bugeye Sprite for 3 years and a Fiat Spider for 2 years. Most of the time you don't even notice it's there, especially on the road, but on the track, in tight corners or on a wet road you notice the extra traction. No sign of wear or filings in the diff oil, even on the high milage and abused rally car. After a while the spring tension goes a bit soft, and the slipping starts at a lower torque, but you can replace the springs as required. They are not as good as a proper LSD because they will eventually slip when under maximum load unlike a proper job, and they can't cope with high horsepower outputs, but for under 150BHP and for the money, in my opinion they're good value. I haven't tried one in front wheel drive (my 'S' is fitted with a Quaife style LSD which because of its gentle, progressive nature doesn't aggravate understeer); but my gut feeling is that it would probably be OK. Just my 2 cents worth! |
