Post subject:  Engine Gaskets and engine removal
Well, I finally got round to doing something on my car tonight.
I should be ready to lift the engine out in the next couple of days.

Now, it appears all the gaskets in the engine of my car are of a liquid/ squishy
and silicony substance. Some of it is sitting in the intake and outlet ports of the car
making me think it worth having the engine rebuilt or thoroughly checked over
before it goes back in the car in the distant future.
Can I buy complete gasket and rubber mount kits as opposed to chasing up everything
individually? Is liquid gasket in any way preffered to the other kind?

Also, what does an 1100 engine and gearbox weigh approximately? I recently
scored a lifting machine that should get the engine out of my car, but it is limited to safe
working load of 160kg.

Finally, what would have to be done to be able to have all wheels on the ground for my car whilst the engine is lifted out? Do I have to remove the driveshafts, or can I get round that?

Yes - any mini supplier can sort you out with a set to suit what you are doing be it just taking off the head or doing a complete strip down.

Don't know about others but my mech used all the paper gaskets AND the gasket sealant on all the joints. I comes down to how fond are you of oil leaks in the driveway? seal them well and they don't leak.

Sorry NFI but I would think you would be safe at under 160kg
[I would guess at around 120 but maybe someone else may have more detail available]

You disconnect the driveshafts at the inner joint [either pot joint or one of the variants of a uni-joint]. The drive shafts themselves do not need to be removed from the wheel hubs to effect the engine removal.

Yes complete engine/transmission gasket sets do exist, I bought one (for a 1275) from Graham Russell.
Only thing I can see that's not in it is the diff side cover seals. :wink:

Engine & box weighs around 350 lb I think.

Minis are supposed to have gaskets, not `make do' silastic.. :lol:

No you should not have to remove the driveshafts to get it out. Undo the inner joints & lift away.
But to get it back in, you may want to pop one or both top balljoints. Depends what driveshafts you have.

What, they don't have driveshafts?? And their oil seals... U know, where the oil pisses out from? :lol:
Josh runs an A+ box and it has them.. so which seals are you talking about? :?

:idea: I thinky U are talking about engine side covers not DIFF ones... :lol:

NO kits come out with them cos Rover never put them in as a std so no one else does.
you can get the driveshaft seals sepreatly and they are not expensive.
I sell the entire kit incl the drive shaft seals for about $100 so you should be albe to get them that side for about the same or even less.
