Hi all, My engine rebuild is coming along nicely, my engine builder recommended I use omege piston with their matching ring set. Has anyone on here had experience with the Omega's? They'll be + 060thou 1330 pistons James |

most use Hypatec pistons... Omegas are popular in UK, but very expensive |

I got omega 40thou pistons very nice and light. Cant say there are any problems with them after 5000km of running. Rings still have sharp edges etc... |

I have been running the +20 forged in my turbo motor for over 10 years or so now, probably only 10,000km but its hard km and boost levels out to 18psi and no issues last time I looked at them. highly recommend and will use them again no doubt. Grant |

If you are happy to spend the money they are a good product, but there are more affordable quality pistons available. |

Firstly you should probably let us know what the application is for. If you are running forced induction you will want to go forged for sure. If it is for a roady or even a race car you can happily use the hypatecs as mentioned earlier. I have no problems using the hypatec pistons even in 13:1 comp race engines so I think there are better ways of spending your money than on expensive pistons unless the application demands it. I have measured and weighed the hypatecs and measured the tolerances they are built with, for a budget piston they are absolutely amazing value. Your engine builder is probably making you spend more than you need to. G |

I agree Hypatecs are a good piston for a roady. However after a recent Hastings cast top ring double failure on a member's fresh build, I would insist on the chrome ring set. Or uses another brand of rings, see below. Russell Engineering's pistons are good too, are similar design to the Hypatecs, but lighter. RE's pistons, available in +.060" 72.5, 73.0, 73.5, 74.0mm come with a Nippon ring set. They retain tension very well, and will fit Hypatecs. |

This motor (+.060" bore stroker) was built, then run in on GR's dyno a few years ago. Then it had power runs. It made 103HP @ the crank which was good for its spec. [edit] It then sat unused (with oil in the bores) for ~2 years whilst the owner worked on the car. Back on the road January this year. 2650km later, it was huffing and puffing out the breathers. Pulled down, it revealed the top ring on #1 piston had broken 1" from the end some time ago, it wrecked the ring lands and wore the bore at the top. #2 piston's top ring had a fresh recent break, 3mm from the end. It had not done any damage. We tried a spare Hastings ring in the #3 bore and it had approx a .013" gap. So, it would appear that these 2 rings broke many miles apart. The motor is now running again with a fresh rebore, GR's 72.5mm pistons and a Nippon ring set. The PCV valve is pulling good vacuum today, so no blowby. ![]() |
