gday all.... well the 1100 has a spun bearing....good news aye, and it was so close to rego...the closest mini ive owned to getting it registered in NSW!!! and so close to being supercharged aswell 
so its coming back out....ive taken 2 motors out through the bonnet...one morris and a clubby (i wish i had a clubby when it comes to takeing them out through the bonnet!!!) so what easier in a morris.....drop the subframe or out the bonnet??? cheers for help, blake |

Take it out thru the top. Taking out the subframe makes it hharder to get back in in my opinion. You can have a motor out and on the bench in 1 hour. Good luck Cheers Aaron |

yeah the k has hydro.....would never even think of dropping the frame with hydro!!!  (too much trouble to get it pumped up again!)
so can the frame be a bitch to line up again when re-asembling? cheers, blake

when the car has a had a hit, yes very much. But you don't know until you goto put it back in.... Out the top, it's not that hard and probably easier anyway. Cheers Aaron |

I've done both on hydro. and i will never drop it out the bottom again. i did it the first time i took the engine out and never again. and i have a hydro pump. |

go on blake tell them how we got the engine out the easy way. dont worry i wont tell them that we cut the grille holder off it's all oxy ' d up again though so it was all good. |

Oh dear, You have been working with those spacious clubman engine bays! Real men men don't need all that room! At leat it's out. While it is out, check your brake lines and brake switch. Best to do while it has no motor. Cheers Aaron |

Hey guys, my engine is coming out now. Tell me, can it be taken out with the alternator, radiator, etc still attached? Pretty sure it can, but will it make much difference? Does the exhaust manifold have to come out and the carb assembly? Looks like a bastard of a job to remove the manifold. Also, does the car have to have the wheels off the ground to do so? I was going to disconnect everything except the mounts, move the car under the block n tackle, then lift. Alternately, (I haven't got hydro) how hard is it to drop the lot out the bottom? Looks like it'll be easier for me. I'd rather do it that way if I can. I know clubbies can do it, will I have trouble on the morris? Thanks |

Carbs usually need to come off, I'd take the alternator and dizzy cap off too, if a roundnose.. The exhaust depends what you have. If stock cast iron manifold it can stay on motor. Leave the radiator on, provided you have a lifting bracket (or can lift without it tilting left or right). |

I have extractors. How hard is dropping the lot through the bottom? I'd rather do it that way, cause I can just have the whole assembly sitting there and I can pull bits off and put them on as I want. JAMs site makes it look easy, is it that simple? |

It look simple to drop it out, but... Minis being built as they were and the odd front end hits since means it often takes some prying with a wrecking bar and BFH to get them out. Once out, with the steering arms unconnected they do not wheel around nice, nor are they well balanced. Once out, if you want to do anything to the motor but take the head off, you still have to hoist it from the subframe... 
As said before if it's hydro you need to depressurise it first, but then watch you don't damage the hoses on the way out.. Last time I dropped two out, there was a reason- I swapped a 998 MiniMatic & its `matic subframe, with a 1310 Cooper S and subframe, between 2 cars....
