Post subject: | Engine Breathing |
I am going to use a 1100 S engine in my Mini rebuild and would like to know what effect on the engine it would have if I changed a few things. 1. Remove the hose from the Oil Seperator (rising from left side of engine) and put in a filter on the end like Jans beast, and 2. Replace the Rocker Cover (which has a hose coming off it to the air filter cover) and replace it with an alloy cover with no hose. Thanks Ziff |

It will breathe OK, for road use. But for track work you would want to run both hoses to a catch tank. If the alloy cover doesn't have one it can be added easily. Note- motor will breathe out thru that filter, not in- and you will probably get more fumes in the car with either system, as the motor is no longer re-digesting its own effluent like it does with the PCV in place. ![]() |

Thanks Doc, what if I keep the hose from the oil separator but change the rocker cover to no outlet? Ziff |

Original 1100S had no outlet on the rocker cover, it was like a Cooper S- restricted airflow IN thru the cap then out the crankcase vent and into the PCV valve on the manifold. So no you don't really need one on the rocker cover for road use etc. |

Thanks very much. Makes me wonder why the old fella had changed the rocker cover then. I bought the whole 1100 from an ex BMC mechanic in Adelaide who worked there for about 35 years. He used to race them as well and preferred the 1100s to the Minis. According to him the 1100 that I bought was his pet car and when I told him I was going to pull the engine out and drop it in a Mini he said he didn't want to know ![]() Ziff |
