Post subject:  Supercharging a 998cc?

After seeing some youtube videos of how much power 998s get when supercharged I was toying with the idea of this....

member on here has a supercharger for sale with a 7psi pulley.

What would need doing for it to go on? do I need to change much to 'protect' the motor? and obviously it will affect longevity at one point. but by how much?

Is the car a Daily Driver? if not you could just risk it and wack it on and go. Yes one day it may break the engine but 998's are cheap so when it dose break either fix it or replace it with an engine built more for the boost.

Not really. my wife drives it to work. That said it will be driven sedately. lol and she drives maybe once or twice a month

I will drive it on some days but even then I hvae a lot of mechanical sympathy.

otherwise maybe it can go on the manual clubman S I'm doing up as a hillclimb car

No joke, I thought about the same thing this morning, keen to see where this goes.

I suppose as posted above.

I could pull a YOLO and just do it. Will try and research a little more!

Suppose it depends on what you're doing with it. A 998 by itself is pretty bullet-proof, but not exactly a performer. You would want a new cam as the stock profile would be all wrong. There have been several turbo 998's made, but they all have the same problem - low end torque. On a low compression 998 with no boost, they're normally a slug, and not great for around town. A supercharged 998 would be much better.

The worst I think could happen is a blown head gasket, unless you're thrashing an old engine here.

engine is good actually...

theres a kent 276 cam listed on here. will that work?

its going on a minimatic if that makes a difference!

You want a `turbo' type cam grind, these have a wider LCA (= less valve overlap). Because with either a turbo or S/C, too much overlap means you are blowing fresh charge out the exhaust whilst both valves are open.
Talk to Graham Russell, he does a couple of good ones (RE13T, RE83T). Benjamin's 1152 turbo motor (with RE13T cam) made about 127HP ATW when last run.

What Yobbo says is right, a low compression 998 turbo off boost is pretty much a slug, doubly so on a Matic due to the low stall speed of the converter. I guess a S/C one would be better though.

So that's a no on the 276?

Yeah with the 998 being an auto I imagine the supercharger wouldn't hurt. Top end its mostly ok. Low end not so much.

Do you reckon I need to prepare anything else for it?

C/R on the Matics is 9.0:1. I would drop a 12G202 head (off a 1098) onto it, the inlet valves are a bit bigger and C/R will be lower.
Or a 12G295 (998 Cooper one) even more so.

I would not use a 276 cam on a blown 998, particularly in a Matic.

Funny thing is that im also thinking of putting a Supercharger on my GR built 998cc

What cam do you suggest drmini?

Otherwise if the profile will be fine or it will run fine after I put a different head to it it should be ok. I just want a little more power to keep up with traffic. I'll probably do the clubman up with more bits.

I would be a false economy to just put a supercharger on it. A 202, or ideally a 295 or modified 202 head would be good and a turbo cam. You should be able to pick up a 2nd hand head in decent condition and a turbo cam for much less than the supercharging cost.

might be the go. is it worth changing carbs out on it? weber 40 is probably overkill?

I don't know much about webers. Most people go with Hif44 SU carbs - there is a turbo version. Might be a bit big for a 998 though, but I'm unsure.
