I stripped the gearbox on my MKII Cooper S this weekend and when I turned the casing over found several of the fins were broken off. I'm wondering if it would be worth TIG welding and fettling the fins back to original condition or replace the casing. Does anyone have experience with this and have a contact in Melbourne that could carry out the repair work? Also, if someone has a spare case they would like to sell please let me know. I see there is another number stamped in the case, is this a serial number or does it have any relevance to the year and model? Casing 22G1128, remote box. Thanks Tim |

We're not at a place yet with the 1128 cases where they are unobtainable. The cases which come out of the Morris 1100s with the same gearbox (wide ratio) are usually in excellent condition due to being well protected. The problem is the front of your case is stamped for the ratio fitted within if it is still original... |

And, it had the funny rubber sandwich mounted remote extension. You want a Mini K or early 1098 Clubby box. re welding the fins, yeah it's easy. Any shop that TIGs aluminium could do it. |

Thanks fellas Aside from the case number in the casting there is what looks like a 4 digit code stamped into the case on the same side but on the other end. Do you know what this might be? |

That is the serial number. It can be used to tell what the box was originally fitted to. I haven't worked it all out yet. It seems go along the lines of... 1234 or 12345 or 5/12345 = K FAXE 1234 = Mk2 S 22/1234 = Clubman 30/1234 = Export Moke I'm sure there is a proper list somewhere. |

If there's no rub marks next to the diff at all it is/was probably an S/GT or a Moke box. |

Doc the stamped coding on the front tells you if was a close ratio (ie cooper S/GT) 23/XXXX is clubman GT |
