After reading up on the end float tolerances for the primary gear I am little uncertain what I should be aiming for.

The standard tolerance is 3 thou to 6 thou and Calver suggests 5 thou for performance engines and 4 thou for every day driving.

My engine is 1275 with RE 83 cam and ported head by GR, so it will be a modestly quick street car. Any suggestions?

The current float is 6 thou with a new c washer and new 114 thrust washer and I was thinking of taking it down to 4 with a new thrust washer (116 thou). Expensive little thing they are.......

Welcome any suggestions

I usually aim for 4-5 thou. But I'd not waste $$ just to get from 6 thou to 5..

Just bought a new thrust from Ben at Mini Plus. He got them at a good price.
