Hey all.
Has anybody ever replaced or converted their Australian built wind up windows with 1/4 glass to the English/ rover one piece glass doors. I have a van that I want to swap doors as I hate fiddling with 1/4 windows and retain the external door hinges. Somebody mentioned that the rover doors are bigger & require bodywork mods to fit. If anybody has done it or knows somebody who has, I'd like to know if is worth the hassle

nup, rover doors are a lot bigger - if you look at your car, there's a finger width panel between the top of the door and the roof gutter, on a rover it's not there.

The only way to do it would be to start with a sliding window door, get custom glass cut and adapt a window mechanism out of something else, probably electric too - ford focus mechanism is nice and compact, I was fiddling with mine on the weekend

Not as scary as it sounds. I recently got custom glass made cause the last owner cocked up the shape of the window frame when they were reattached to the doors (and it was already painted). $180 for 2 brand new 5mm toughened windows made to my template.

I have seen doors "converted" to one piece wind up's and apparently it's not that hard.
I have also grafted Rover internal hinges onto my 74 Leyland van but the rest of the door is still Aussie wind up. I do plan on making them into one piece wind up's but haven't looked into it yet, so I'd like to see what this tread turns up.

Yeh i know a bloke whose done it- except he's a bastard and wont tell anyone how it was done.
Works pretty well, but it not easy to do.

My plan was to just make a ply or MDF "glass" template and see if it will work on the std winder mechanism. One problem I can see is the front of the door hoop doesn't extend down the front of the door so with out that the glass may fall forwards when wound down. But a simple solution would be get another door and cut the straight sections of hoop out and graft them onto the front of the hoop.

Thanks for the advice. I have a spare door so I will have a crack at making a one piece glass fit and rigging up a mechanism of sorts. If it works I will let you know how it is done.
