Post subject:  RE83 cam timing
Hi Guys
I have GR's RE83 cam and am about to install it. Firstly does anyone know what the timing should be? I've read on other chats that the RE13 uses 105 deg but my cam doesn't have any stamp or engraving on it. Appreciate your help if you happen to know.

Also, is there a beginners process for setting the timing? I have all the right tools and a standard key to start but would appreciate some advice on how to go about it.

It is 105deg, same as the RE13 is. see my reply in the other thread.

Hi Tim,
Motor is looking good. I noticed you have a new set of cam followers. Do yourself a favour and have the followers reground. The problem being they are not ground correctly, even though they are new. No matter where you get them from, the are all made by the same company. Take them down to Clive Cams and tell him I sent you down. He's a good friend of mine and will sort you out. Or if you would rather, send them to me and I'll grind them correctly for you.
There is a problem with the followers being sold out of the UK not being correct. I have just organised a cam follower facer to be shipping to Keith Calver as there is no one in England who can grind cam followers. Keith will be re-grinding the followers for all the major suppliers out of the UK.
Take a look at the photo below. You can see one has been ground correctly, the other ones I just touched the face a little bit to give you an idea at how out of true they are. If you look closely, none of them are consistent across face of the follower. They are all but dead flat and even then the radius of the faces aren't even across. They are off centre. If left as they are, they won't spin in operation and will just hammer away on the cam. This can be checked when the motor is assembled and the tappets are set. Rotate the motor by hand. The push rods should rotate. With my cam and followers, the push rod rotates over a 1/4 turn on each revolution.

cam follower facer... say that three times quickly...
GR or others in the know, what is the correct form of the follower face.. i thought it had an angled edge or is the face as a whole a wide radii ? (the old one i have sitting in front of me has neither

Hi FNQ
Normally the radius is 72/74ins but it varies from 36 to 78 ins I grind mine with a 1.5 tho radius that's from the outer edge to the centre of the follower and find this works well with the taper I put on the lobe of the cam.

I cant believe how hard it is to find that Data on the web Graham. I have read it needs to match the cam and one entry saying 3 degrees but no one has delivered it in one line.

So is it a cone or a dome profile as a Cone profile will give you line contact with the cam and a dome will give you point contact. I'd have thought cone better.

A cone will work well, the point will wear as the cam and follower wear In to each other that's why the radius is better as it is more gentle in the bedding in process, I have a cam here (sw5) that was fitted with a new set of followers in 3kto3.5k the lifters are badly pitted some just had a line across them where they were not turning at all, the cam was not to bad at all but one thing that stood out was where the follower was touching the lobe as it come off the tappet ramp it was missing the flank of the lobe and then touching right up at the top of the lobe, I will take some photos and get Aaron to post them for me, this was because the follower was flat and the steep flank angle of the lobe it just was not touching the flank of the lobe.
