Post subject:  ihi turbo suitability for a mini?

Hi

A mate has an ihi turbo that he doesnt need want any more, that there is nothing wrong with. He said i could have it for $100. He reckons it would go great on a mini

He told me it is an ihi turbo that is water and oil cooled. It is from a 1.6L ford capri and is the same as fitted to Mazda Miata and 232 and ford tx3 (thats what he told me). (im unsure of what model turbo it is, sorry)

I know extremely little about Turbo's

Are these suitable for a mini, has any-one done it, how did it go, is it a good price/worth getting?

Thanks in advance

Brenton

there was a guy up newcastle way kazjim? , anyway he was using a IHI rh5? i think on a 998 . He was up around the 70ish wheel hp.

The car was flat black with plates brick i think.

You would have to get and see where it can fit ,im unsure of the phsical size of these turbos, you will also need carb , regulator , fuel pump and lines so will add up.

You can source most T2's for around $100 and a newer gt17 for around $150-200

Thanks Ben

So not that great of a Turbo and not that good of a deal either.

I have a Hiff 44. So would obviously need someone to weld a manifold  etc

I just thought it might be good to grab. But doesnt sound like it, as i dont currently have a car for it, just one of those things that "might be useful, eventually"

It is a fairly small one, so would fit ok, from what he has described.

Thanks

Hello Bubbacluby,
You may or may not have the "turbo" HIF44, which has a sealed throttle shaft (for a blow through application, as per the metro turbo).

I would think the sealed throttle shaft is a necessary prerequisite to use the carby in a blow through application...

The part number for my Metro Turbo carby is FZX1435 - shown on a tag screwed to the carby.

Hope this helps.

Thanks MattE

I have decided to not to grab this turbo because there are newer and I assume better ones available.

Your telling me there are more than one type of HIF44??

Ahhh I didn't know this. Is it just a matter of rebuilding it with the correct parts for a Turbo? or its a different su all together?

I got it in a bunch of stuff i bought, so its no big loss.

How do i tell just by looking at it, as i doubt i will find a part number on it?

There would be heaps and heaps of HIF44 models, but the key difference would be between the turbo and non turbo ones. Others would have automatic choke systems and so on.
I don't think you could put seals in a non turbo carby, as there are recesses in the body for the seals to live in. Then again, almost anything is possible with good machine work!
Suggest looking at the throttle shaft ends to see if there are seals present.
Post a photo of it here and the gathered masses can comment.
Minispares UK are flogging them new.

Have you joined the aussie mini turbo forum, Oz Boosted Minis?

A non turbo hif44 can be modified to suit turbo use, that is what I will be using when I get around to it. Have a look on Turbominis forum and you will find all the info you could want.
As for the turbo if it is an IHI rhf4 or 3 it would be good for a 998 and over 100hp. Check the link below.

Stooge,
How are they modified to use in turbo applications?
Is the body modified to accept throttle seals?

(Please save me from having to trawl the turbominis forum!)
