Post subject:  Engine Swapping.

Hi all,

Basically what I want to know is how a 1275cc mini engine (or the larger bored variants), if turbo charged or supercharged, compares to total converstions, such as the Swift GTi or Startlet 4EFTE engines?

Are they close in terms of acceleration and power? or are we talking totally different ball parks?

Also, to those who have carried out total conversions for more modern engines, how long did the swap take? how much did it cost? where did you get your parts? was it all worth it?

Basically I've been having thoughts of trying my hand at the starlet converstion, inspired by 13secmini, and obviously with a lot of help (couple of mates are mechanics), and was wondering if there are alternatives that are near as good and easier to carry out?

Totally different cars...

My reasonably hard worked 998 turbo is pushing 73HP at the wheels...
12PSI, and in a fairly agressive tune....

Brads StarletGT Clubbie is pushing an easy 150HP at the wheels and hardly breaking a sweat doing it ...

Deans StarletGT Clubbie should be running close to 250HP at the wheels when its done... PLUS Nitrous Oxide !!

I think the A Series is still a bit of a challenge to some of us, who just lke to tinker, but if you want a seriously fast car, the a conversion is for you....

For me, I'll plug on the 998 until i can get it to breat 120HP at the wheels.. then I'll call it quits I think .....it should be pretty undrivable by then....

My next round of mods will be
Water-Injection
New Exhaust Manifold
Ball-Bearing Turbo
MASSIVE Head work
some minor fuelling mods....(change pump and regulator...)

Later

Go the 4EFTE conversion. Seriously, allocate roughly $2k for a frame. I imagine it will come close to that. You'll pick up a front cut for $1500. You can do it ALOT cheaper if you get smart with it.

There's going to be a whole heap of labour in it but people who say this seam to forget that there would a comporable amount of stuffing about when you're playing with an A series motor.

Say the whole excercise costs you $5k, there won't be many minis that'll beat you. Do it. The 4efte g/box is indestructobuble too. If clubmans weren't so damn ugly I would do a 4efte conversion tomorrow.

But they are.... they ARE pig ugly....

Why do you think i havnt solved all my problems by fitting my engine to a Clubbie and adding a thumping great intercooler ?

I'd have to kick my own arse if i bought a clubbie.....

Hey, I'm only joking.. i used to have a clubbie...... long time ago....

I'm assuming that price wouldn't include brake conversion and changed exhaust (4EFTE would need a cat). Am I right?

Most people will try and convince you that you'll be up for $1k for brakes. $1k will get you S hubs with metro callipers/rotors (rebuilt). You can make it as cheap or as expensive as you like.

A customer brought his Moke in for its first service (it was most probably a Californian) and my mate working on the service desk asked if he had any particular problems with the car. The owner calmly asked if the water leaks could be fixed today or would he have to leave it overnight  Now thats a bright Moke owner! We had a big laugh over that one. How do you explain that water leaks are standard equipment in a Moke. I had a mate who drove one from Sydney to Kiandra in mid winter. He was a ten chops short of a BBQ also.
