I built this one a while back, but haven't tried it, yet..
Intake for pod filter is 70mm dia... 8)

Design brief was to make the noisy 40DHLA Dellorto `shut the f*** up' when put on the wife's car. But it's now getting twin HS4s instead...

I got a 6" ruler, measured what room I had between the Dellorto and firewall and deducted 10mm. Ditto the height. Put a 63mm bellmouthed entry on, it looked small, so I made a 70mm one.
Original idea was to put a ram pipe to it with the pod on the end, but as ram pipes do SFA for a Mini (according to Vizard) I stuck the pod straight on to begin with.
The fitting is so close that the LH bonnet hinge has to be removed to slide the plenum in sideways. It's then bolted onto the carb flange plate. Sealing is a bead of silastic, windscreen sealer or whatever, so I can get it apart.
It also has 2 of my stubstacks in there.
Yet to be fired up, it's a "work in progress". :P
It won't fit Ha-Ha now, because I changed the carb mount angle on my Redline 3005 manifold, (not the one shown here) from 12* to 15*..

I don't think it would have any more restriction than the Ramflo filter I use, but the `music' should be a lot quieter. :wink:

That air box that Mickmini posted a pic of is not very affective for performance...it will suffer from "Re-bound Impulses"

hard to tune out

basically the weber/dellorto/solex carbs rely on the "impulses" that come from each cyls valves opening & creating a type of shock wave impulse,,,the Emulsion tubes inside the weber, rely on these shock waves to help with their emulsufiction of the air/fuel & the metering therof

so ,,,in effect, this very shallow type of air box/plenum assy do tend to stuff with the shock wave impulses by means of a 2nd & 3rd "Re-Bound" impulse caused by the back plate of the airbox/plenum thing simply being too dam close to the mouth of the carb ,,,very problematic if you wanted the thing tuned "PERFECTLY",,,I`m not saying that it won`t run,,,obviously, just that it`s very very far from being very good.

also, what tends to happen is that the air imediately around the mouth of that carbs throats is not very stable air,,,it`s in a mad rush, re-bounding off all the closed in ,narrow walls with tight corners to negotiate & therfor isn`t a very stable, avaliable or constant supply of air,,,it`s all erratic & very messy & non-controled air

2 very very YuKKy situations , & a very good example of how "NOT" to build an air box,,,especially with performance in mind,,,Much deeper would be way better, the rest of the design is pretty good,,,just way too dam shallow/narrow.

I`m sure that very same weber, with a very different deeper ,more open airbox/plenum thingy, would work far far better,,,it`s just a bit spivvy lookin isn`t it???,,,makes people thing it`s all good & all proffesional hey?,,,,, Looks can be desceiving.

Mr BMC didn't leave much room in a Mini for Weber airboxes/plenums unless you bin the centre speedo, which I won't do. :x
One day I'll fit it & see how/if it works. It's for a roadie only.....
If no work I'll eBay it and make a killing. 8)

this is why i posted it up - always get a good techo respose from you guys.

i have a couple of ideas on retaining the centre speedo but moving it further rearward, it also involves shifting the loom so the manifold can be long and the filter sit in the new space. nothing drastic, but trying to reduce the compromise of the bends in the manifold and the size of ram stacks that you can have with the speedo there. when i get a garage......

Yeah I've already cut a hole in Ha-ha's firewall, big enough to put a Ramflo on, with my Graham Russell DCOE manifold. But, the bloody speedo, its cable and wiring will all foul it unless I move it into the cabin. If I do that it'll look shithouse- so stuff it, I'll just keep the ported out Redline. :lol:
