OK I am sick an tired of not being able to fill my tank with petrol - cause of the leak when full.

I'm thinking of going to a wreckers and getting the fill pipe of a modern car - something with a screw cap (like on a falcon etc) and getting this welded to an old tank.

Has anyone else done this and / or got a better solution? I'm thinking modern caps are non vented - but a mini tank has the vent tube right? Does anyone here have a non leaking petrol cap - do u still get the fumes from the vent pipe?

While I'm getting tanks welded - how can I increase the capacity? Are the UK 7.5 gallon tanks available in Oz? I do have a right hand tank, but I'm not going to fit that to my run about - besides then I will have two leaks!!!

The trick seems to be get a good seal under the cap...you need to experiment with different thicknesses of neoprene etc....

Could your vent tube be closed up anywheres??

I have a large tank complete with a band of pinholes in the bottom...I was going to ask the Doc if its worth saving I assume you could fill the empty tank with sand or such like before you got the nibbler and MIG out

Problem with Mini tanks is the necks are all bent about from people forcing locking caps off. Mine leak too...

Mick, I'd take to a radiator place. They can weld it or lead wipe it, then coat the inside with that stuff the bike shops use. Can't remember wot it's called..
A radiator guy at Castle Hill did Barney's RH one this way.

Best type of seal for caps is a hard graphited fibre material. Sort of dark grey colour. Hard rubber/neoprene may do the trick. The problem is caused by the seal bunching up when you twist the cap on. The thin rubber seals bunch up and bingo - instant leak. The red fibre type seal doesn't seem to be too good either. Too thin?
Original caps used the grey graphite fibre material. Had the same leak problem until I found some original type seals.
Vent pipe should protrude through hole in boot floor with grommet seal. Not sure on LH single tank cars if vent should go to opposite side of car to vent hole adjacent to battery cable hole. On twin tank 'S' cars tanks vent to opposite sides of car.

yeah i was in the same problem with my clubbie. My fuel cap leaked because of***********who tryed to shimmy the cap off with screw driver etc. This left the lip of the fuel tank, mangled. so i simply bought a second hand fuel tank, made sure the tank was dry, then i got the wire brush onto the lip and took it back to bare metal, painted the tank and lip leaving a lil bare metal at the end of the neck. Turned up a treat. Fixed my problem.

That's what mine are. POS design- rubber goes hard from the fuel. Have a look at Brads, I think they are a better design. He got 'em from Padstow Pirates.

It's not their age, bet you it still leaks..I've had two NEW ones on my car and all have leaked...If it doesn't, you ain't driving hard enough

My locking caps have all leaked, and looking at the stains on my latest, its from the key hole.
Maybe I just corner too fast?

I've just managed to find a non locking type cap at super cheap 0 $7.00 fits real tight and requires both hands to open and or close it!!! I'll fill up tomorrow and report on how the seal is.

I don't know if petrol theft is a problem anymore, but my motor is already stuffed, and I park off street at home and work, so I'm willing to risk it for the moment... Besides, if someone really wants petrol, the locking type is easy enough to open anyway.

I'd be more worried about some silly ********* stuffing a rag in there and taking a lighter to it. Or pouring some water in.

I had a Triumph Dolomite once upon a time and the poms in their wisdom put the fuel tank on the boot floor and it rusted through. I fixed it with a wire brush to get the rust off and cleaned the tank out and then covered it with fibreglass mat. It lasted until i sold the car some years later and I was not interested after that.
