Post subject:  Rod change shifter on top of the tunnel

Ok so I remember seeing this on a lowered racing mini (less crap under the car and more room for the exhaust). But I can't find much reference to it.

I'm planning on putting a rod change box into my early Moke (was a pudding stirrer). And figure I'll need to butcher the tunnel any way, why not gain some clearance and lift the shifter up at the same time, makes it easier to reach!

So:
do the rods need to be bent so that each end remains horizontal, or can they both just angle upwards?

I don't have the box yet so I can't really visualize it!

BTW I'll be selling a good running 1275 auto if anyone is interested, maybe 2 months away.

Cheerio.

You need universal joints, not just a bent linkage rod. Because it will be solid mounted inside the car, it won't need the second stabilising rod.
You can buy kits that come with all the bits including mounting brackets e.g.

or for a real race car:

Didn't willy buy that KAD one and found it wouldn't fit the Oz tunnel? :?

I was going to use small universal joints on the Twini. You can buy them with the correct size bore for the rod change shaft. Have a brochure on them somewhere.

Way too much money and then I'd have to shorten the shaft any way to fit the moke!!! I can see a bit more grinder/welding time instead.

I'll be interested in the uni joint info from IndigoBlueCooperS

The poms made an extention that ran in the car that you run directly off a wandering stick/pudding stirrer. It bolted on top of the gear tunnel.

Someone posted some pics of it a couple months ago. I havnt got any picturs of mine on hand to show you what i mean, but they come up for sale on uk ebay occasionally.

Someone will hopefuly remember the picture/topic

Correct. The bracketry is manufactured for a Rover floor pan which is flatter across the exhaust tunnel at that point.

Another thing to take note, is that the engine will have to be fairly solid, as to not "pop" itself out of gear when on and off the throttle.

Isn't this for a pudding stirrer not rod change box?

Yes.

He said he was planning to put a rod change in it and that it originally was a pudding stirrer. I was thinking he could keep the pudding stirrer and have the benfits of a remote/rod change mechanism beside you through the use of this, with it inside the car as he wanted.

My car (ex mini7) used to have an internal shifter, cause the car was as low as possible, and as above, made more room for the race exhaust. Because the tunnel has been butchered I have had a hell of a time over the years messing with custom shifter mounts, exhaust etc.....makes me think it would be worth getting one.

At some point I've seen a write up on making one out of plain old socket set uni's.....I would have thought it was on here, but if nobody remembers it, maybe it was minimania...

This one?

Uses socket set UJ's

There was a discussion on TMF aswell, about the engine needing to be really solidly mounted, otherwise it would move and pull the car out of gear because the gear linkage used to be rubber mounted and now isn't?

Not sure how valid it is, just but worth mention I suppose

Funny, I've been mulling over the same mod for my Moke recently.

A guy named Scott Beavis in the UK did this mod back in about 1993 when the "internet" consisted of newsgroups not webpages, so no pics. I never did see pics of the finished product. Scott has since sold the Mini and moved on to other interests.
