Hi All, is it possible to put 4syncro internals into a 3syncro deluxe REMOTE type gearbox casing? Or is there already a thread on this? Also where is the best to buy ALL of the 4syncro internals(mk2 cooper s style) :)

4-syncro gear kit (shafts) are way longer...so they won`t fit straight in,,, but i`d expect if you machined a whole pile of stuff & miss-matched another whole pile of stuff then maybe , at a pinch, it might be able to be done

but why would anyone want to?

just use a 4 syncro case instead , yeah??? isn`t that easy? no?

Nope can't fit 4 synchro bits into any 3 synchro case.
You want a Mini K>Mk2S>early clubby pre-rodchange case.
I got my Mk2S cluster gear 22G1040 from Karcraft (were cheapest here), and an 18T 1st motion shaft DAM3167 from Mini King (were cheapest here).
This 1275GT gear takes the late 3rd motion shaft with the 18mm nose bearing. I converted an old 14mm shaft to 18mm (a conversion I also do for people here). More durable than the 14mm bearing.
18T Cooper S 22G1371 1st motion shafts for the 14mm mainshaft are getting rarer... but Karcraft still lists them.
Alternative- buy from Minispares UK.

Hi Doc,

How do you convert a 14mm shaft to an 18mm one? :?

Do you add a sleeve to it?

This means you can run the A+ bearing on it yes?

Cheers

PM sent with details.

The shoulder next to the spline is hard turned or cylindrically ground down to 15mm dia, and a Torrington IR1515 or IR1516 hardened inner ring pressed on. There is 2.5mm of the shoulder left there. Machining must be accurate. I can't do it on my Myford bench lathe.
Interference fit is .0005" (1/2 a thou).
Finally, cut the old 14mm nose off flush with an angle grinder. It is still there, in pic.
Yes it then take the 18mm A+ bearing, you could use it in an A+ box too.

Thanks Doc, got message.

If using in an A+ box it would have to be with the A series laygear and the rest of bits and pieces right?

Sorry if I sound ignorant I'm not that well versed with the gearbox side of things.

Cheers

No it is the same dimensions as an A+ mainshaft. Can use with A+ gears (but I've never done it, A+ boxes were pretty rare here until people started importing Rover Minis).

I recall that with the Copper S 3 synchro boxes that when the main shaft nose bearing surface used to wear we got them hard chromed. Seemed to work ok.

Anyway a 4 synchro 1st motion shaft will fit a 3 synchro main?

No. Won't fit.

However I have saved a 3 synchro Cooper S mainshaft by hard turning the worn 14mm nose down to 10mm dia, then press fitting an IR1020-2 bearing inner ring on. Use a .0004" (4 tenths of a thou) interference fit.
Grind the end of the ring flush with the shaft after fitting.

Nose will then look like this 4 synchro remote one-
