Hey guys there is a belt drive setup for sale on ebay, which you put inplace of the timing chain setup, and i was just wondering if there is any improvements to your minis perlormance by fitting one?

I've got one, had it for years. Ignition timing and valve timing stays put. Dunno about power, but mine still spins to 8K OK... :P

Belt drives also run quieter, supposedly more efficient, and dont stretch as much (keeps timing right)

Yes, they don't stretch as much.... until they snap. Then it makes a very expensive sounding 'bang' as the valves headbutt pistons :)
You are supposed to replace the belt every 100 000 kays, but my guess is that you'll be rebuilding the motor way before you clock up that much!

Nobody seems to know how long the Mini belts are supposed to last. I changed mine at 40,000 miles, and it looked like new. Unlike the ones I used to take off my Fiat twin cam after 50,000 miles..

On a Mini, there's no idler on the back to flex the belt inside out and stuff up the facing on the teeth. I believe that's what f**ks up most timing belts- and old age... :wink:

How much are new belts? Is the conversion expensive.

I was considering going to double-row chains when I rebuild a couple of motors in the near future so it would be nice to know.

Belt is $60 from Karcraft. Cheaper in UK.

Kit is expensive- Karcraft want $532 for a vernier adjustable one... ouch!

There is a cheaper one in UK.

My S motor had one when I got it.. :D
It's not a vernier one- so I just use offset keys.. :wink:

There are a few tricks when installing it to get the best seal, it is a bit quieter and does not stretch like the chians do. I had one, but I sold it with the engine.
Also comes in handy for fine tuning, wether it be on the raod or the dyno as you dont have to remove the timing cover to adjust the cam timing.
