How do 1100's handle on the highway/freeway at constant 100km/h with heat ?

My engine is a stock 1100, freshly rebuilt.

Is is advisable to stop every 2 hours to let it cool or what ?

I asked mechanic about an oil cooler but he said it wasnt really needed.

if its a good motor and timing is setup good it should run cooler on the hwy, be good to give it a rest every couple of hour anyway, also rest your legs, trust me i did 4 hours straight the other day in mine and couldnt walk after....

Should not need an oil cooler, unless you are thrashing it around a track ie racing..
I have one but it's off at the moment. Motor temp without it is no different.
And I'm running a 1360..
If you want to add cooling capacity for freeway etc use, I recommend mounting a heater core behind the grille, or fit a MiniMatic fresh air heater (under bonnet).

Goodstuff.

Atm it has an air intake on the left which goes straight into the cabin via the the wheel area, i think previous owner did that, so interior colling is set.....or i can just wind down the windows.

Im just paranoid about overheating as thats what happened when the engine went. I want to try and keep everything as cool as possible.

Max you are runninbg in a diplomatic area...
I run a ...(Sorry wife drives a 1098 with a Lead foot) daily drive 80 Kls a day via freeway and peak hour..Now we were experanceing over heating :!:
I changed thermo and flushed the system including heater and all hoses...but I found the Rad was loosing water :!:
I changed everthing and al was fine..then today the Head gasket wwnt on Morris and Sue (wife Prega's) today  yep 1 & 3 Head gasket was gone :?:
Do a Bushishies compretion test..(Ask) or if you have a proper comp tester :!:
Otherwise it could be any of the above or it could be lean or rich.....it's a total grey area without addiotional info :!: and/or testing it could be just a thermo or sender unit or relay in the dash..Pm me I have been thier...But I am no expert as you can see a Head gasket has blowen today but we always lean :!:
Hyway use just take a brake when/ B4 you feel tired :!: or somthing does not look correct

1098 out to 1132 cc and no problem here, even on 40+ degree days.

My Morris 1100S radiator helps.

how well do they go on the freeway revs wise, are they straining or do they still have a bit left?

My 1098 was awesome on the highway. 4000rpm to do 100kph, accelerated to 5000rpm (130) to overtake really well, no problems there. Not so good at overtaking from 80kph, took a bit of time to build up steam in 4th. Moral of the story, don't slow down to 80, keep the revs up :)

Only problem was when the head gasket blew and took parts of the motor with it. Not the engines fault though, the cooling system was sub-par and it was a hot day. My 1275 is going to get a nice new radiator and a high volume water pump, should fix that problem.

Just make sure you have a GOOD temp gauge and keep an eye on it - those standard Clubby ones are crap, they give a vague indication of how warm your heater is.... get an aftermarket one preferably with actual temperatures on them. They don't cost much for a cheap one and they allow you to properly manage your cars temperature.

Don't forget to keep the heater switched on, every bit helps!

Oh and freshly rebuilt? Make sure it is properly run in before you go near any highways.

Ive gotten new pumps also, gone high volume aswell.

Mine was sitting at about 4k to 4.5k when on the freeway.....then id was doing 0k and smoking..lol :(

I have a new temp guage ready to go in also.

Ill b running it in as soon as I get it.
Any tips on how this should b done ? I figured it would just be nice average driving around the neighbourhood for a few hours. Lots of 60k to 70k stuff.

Mine's great on the freeway, i normally sit on about 110-120..which is about 4.5k rpm in top with a 3.44 diff..from 100 it pulls great as anton said to 130 to overtake..I drop down to 3rd if i need to at 80 though  i can get 120km/h out of 3rd...

Mine's an 1152cc...they run alot cooler on the freeway, i've never had a problem with heat on the freeway, used to in traffic on 40 degree days, but a new radiator fixed that...I also fitted an oil cooler for track work..and IMO it helps on the freeway as well...

I would have no problems running mine at 100km/h for hours on end, It's usually only a half hour trip though for me if i'm doing 120+ and it's fine, nice to give it a break though..more for the driver!

Maxi23: I'd recommend a radiator filter to keep any muck (even if the block has been chemi-cleaned, loose particles will free themselves after you've rebuilt the motor......trust me!) out of the radiator. TEFBA is a good little filter that you can plum in line to catch the crud. Rare Spares has them. About $50. Well worth the price.

I've got a mate that's regretting not running one with his $900 alloy radiator....so it's cheap insurance.

Oh yeah, I've gotta pull my mini's radiator 'cos I didn't run a filter either....after I'd rebuilt it and run it 100ks......got VERY hot twice. It was simply muck clogging the radiator.
