Brad,
There is a good bit in the Gregoys manual about what the easiest sequence to do them in is. Don't have one handy at the moment, and you will probably get the answer before I get home, not much help really is it.
Steve.

hold crap Brad, you can build a turbo powered 13 second 1/4 mile mini that'll beat a blown monaro down the straight at wakefield, but you can't adjust tappets on an A series! I'd be very ashamed if I was you :P

first off, take that metal or alloy dealie off the top of the motor.... under it you'll see some mfunny looking metal things with oil on them :P

the manual says to use the rule of 9's, get number 1 fully compressed, and adjust number 8, get number 2 fully compressed and adjust number 7, 6 & 3, 4 & 5, 5 & 4, 6 & 3, 7 & 2 and finally 8 & 1

BUT there is a better way, it's called 1, 2, 3 skip 1 do 1

get number 8 fully compressed, adjust 1, 2, 3, skip 4 and do 5, then get number 1 fully compressed, and do 8, 7, 6 skip 5 and do 4. No-one will believe me, but this works - try it, then go and do it by the book and you'll be amazed :D

on a standard motor, 12 thou when the engine is cold

reading again, do you know how to set the tappet clearance?

excuse the non proper jargon, I don't know what these things are called, I just work on them...

undo the nut on the screw thingy that sits on the pushrod, unscrew the screw thingy a bit, get a 12 thou feeler guage and put it between the rocker and the valve. Give the screw thingy a bit of a tap so you know the pushrod is down in the cam follower properly, then screw the screw thingy down so that the rocker pushes down on the feeler guage, make it tight so that you can slide the feeler guage in and out with a little effort, but not way tight. When it's right, do up the nut, making sure that the screw thingy doesn't turn. I put the ring spanner over the nut, hold the screwdriver in the screw thingy

Brad,
I always use the rule of 9 as skssgn has suggested,m i have never heard of the second way.

but after taking mine out for a flog through parramatta last night i think i might need to adjust them again (bit noisy)

I knew someone was going to ask for this.... I only deleted a Scanned pages from a Pommy mag on how to adjust the tapets...
Let me know if you want a copy and I'll email it for you or I can drop the mag around for you...
Really as above the 9 Method  8-1 7-2 6-3 5-4 Etc...
Doon't know the 1-2-3 Skip 1

I don't do it that way ...
What I do is "modified rule of 9"
Say you turn the engine until valve #1 is on full lift, you can then adjust #8. But you will notice that an inlet valve is within a couple of degrees of full lift too. I turn the motor a few degrees more until it is just about full lift, then adjust its mate (rule of 9) at the same time as I do #8. This way I only have to move the motor 4 times, and I'm done.

This is a method you really have to be shown to comprehend and remember!
Its true.
I was shown by Steve when i was doing some work for him and i still remember the fundamentals of it, oh and if i was left alone with the engine for a few days i'm sure i could remember it and set my tappet guages. :)

I turn the engine TWICE and I'm done - beat that :P

There is also another way which does not require maths for those that are challenged by the thought of numbers. I have been using this method for thirty years and it works. Get the rockers on one cylinder rocking and adjust the opposite cylinder. ie get cyl 1 rocking and adjust cyl 4. Nothing easier. Dial indicators and magnetic bases are cheap these days so you don't even need to muck around with feeler gauges just a dial indicator on top of the rocker above the valve end. Read and adjust.
