Hopefully getting myself a morris with an 1100cc installed. I am looking at setting the car up soley for racing and will strip the car and upgrade brakes etc in the near future.

With a buget of $5000 for the engine would i be better off working on the 1100cc or buying a 1275? Am looking for as much power as possible, race cam etc. It will be only used for circuit racing, hillclimbs etc

What would you recommend and who best to see in melbourne or interstate to build the engine? (don't have time do do it myself)

Also how much hp would i be expecting? i would definatly like over 100hp. will $5000 be enough?????

Cheers

What class are you planning to race in?

This will largely determine the answer to your question because class rules relating to capacity will vary.

If you intend racing under CAMS affiliation, then your best bet is to look at the regulations for various classes on the CAMS website.

For other promoter/operator run things, check their websites.

You will find that most modern classes have a minimum lowest capacity class of <1600cc. Historic classes are mostly <1300cc for the lowest capacity class, or the odd <1000cc and 1000cc-1300cc classes. You can see that in each of these cases a worked 1100 is not going to be as competitive as a worked 1275.

If you are looking at hillclimbs, there may be different capacity classes.

Motorkhanas are not capacity derived but wheelbase derived classes generally, except some of the Mini clubs will run capacity classes (like at Hay).

It is extremely rare to find organisers who will let you do any old thing to the car and run it. This is the biggest mistake that most people make when they "want to get into racing". They just spend a fortune building a car and then wonder why they can't run it anywhere.

So look at the rules first.

cheers
michael

Thats very good information mate. :)

Have read up on all regs that would suit what i want and all classes are 0 -1600cc, which was why i was looking at these options.

Mainly though the car will be used for open track days and the odd events hear and there.

I am trying to do all my mods with a whole budget of $10000. Maybe not including a cage which would go over that budget maybe.

What would i expect to pay for a worked 1275? Would it be better to buy an engine package from os?

Being involved in repairing an engine package `bought overseas' (eBay) by an ausmini member, I say be very careful.
You may not really know what you are really getting- this particular 1380 A+ was poorly built with wrong valve springs for the BIG cam (and it then dropped a valve), when I fixed all that for the owner and he drove it, it was very smoky and rattly. So he's pulled it back out. $$$$ wasted.
[edit] He can't get any joy from the private Ebay seller in UK.
I'm waiting to do a post mortem for him on the bottom end now, but the engine is still in Qld.

Caveat Emptor (buyer beware).
I would get a motor built here, every time.

I suggest you talk to one of your local mini shops, I think it would work out cheaper than importing?
In Sydney you would talk to GR.
Also depends on what you mechanical capabilities are, as if you can do a lot of work yourself then obviously cost less and you would have more money to buy good bits and have machine works carried out.

thats good info, i would prefer to get it done locally anyway. Someone to go to if problems occur.

What are complete standard 1275's worth these days?

Northen mini parts is my local mini specialist. Any good?

I am pretty mechanically minded but have never built or dismantled an engine before. Is it quite technical or best to leave it to the experts?

I very strongly recommend Lindsay Siebler who is in Coldstream. He is very competitive with a mini in group Nb, and is a very experienced and professional engine builder.

He's the best person for you to get to know

I build quick, reliable mini engines & gearboxes at home and I am happy to help you out with your engine, information, parts etc.

Unless you're running to particular class restriction's I wouldn't bother with the 1100.

After the inital engine purchase, costs for recoing & modification are similar and the 1275 engine will outlast the 1100.

To keep within your budget, try to do as much yourself as you feel comfortable with.

I think i might get a 1275 then. I'll start putting the feelers out.

Would i have any issue putting a 1275 in a morris 850? I presume there all the same mounting wise?

Yeah the mounts are all the same (except MiniMatics).
You may want to decide which gearbox to use, I'd not use the old 850's 3 synchro one for various reasons including fitting a 1275 to it.
Get either a Mini K/Mk2 S/Clubby GT/1098 Clubby 4 synchro remote box, or else a rodchange one out of a later Clubby. Your call...
If you go for the remote box you could adapt your 850's magic wand gearshift to it, if you want.

hi there would certainly say the o/seas packages do seem attractive on price ,but as the dr said we have found that the uk peoples idea of a rebuild doesnt really cut the mustard,if i was to personally get something build there would be only a handfull of companies i would entrust the work too overseas.
we provide quite a lot of the imported 1275 engines to mini business's around Oz especially the aplus style for rebuild purposes, these have a rod change 4 sync gearbox which you either like or dislike,
as for people in victoria to rebuild the unit there are quite a few great engine builders around which if your interested send through a pm
1275's are getting harder to find both here and o/seas, when you decide on something do make sure you dont buy a lemon as there are plenty of flogged out engines out there, if its not stripped down then it could be an expensive exercise, and its one we see all too often, hope this helps the quest
cheers josh

You have many options available but keep away from the 1100, you will only want to update to a 1275 after you have built the 1100. I've build many engines with a number a melboure and nsw engine guys and just make sure you find a guy who works with what you want and can afford ! But please don't waste your cash on a 1100 as it best as a boat anchor in the motorracing world ! See you at the track one day ....
