ok all, its happening again.... LPG.. I'm thinking about it .... Saw a great tank - about 15" diameter that replaced the spare-wheel well on a Ute..... got me thinking again.. The barrier to LPG on a mini was the tank and the non-sealed rear-firewall.... LPG is 110+ Octane (RON) and although it has a lwoer calorific value, it certainly has the potential to make a shedload of power...... an IMPCO Gas Carb (Think Forklift) is adequate for about 140HP and is very happy in a turbo "Blow-through" application . . . most six-cylinder converters are also more than adequate as well as being cheap as at the wreckers .... oh, the fuel is also very cheap.... . . . . . . . According to gas co's current ad in Open Road mag, LPG is 102 (RON). hardly worth it.. except it's cheaper once you've paid all the hardware off. ![]() |

Would EFI work rather than using a carb? |

A lot of vans run a tank in the back without a firewall. My work has a 2003 Toyota Hiace SBV with the tank behind the drivers seat. |

Dave, but thats up there.... here in the "nanny state" we have to have it behind several shields of spent-uranium ....... Kev, even at 102RON its still better than 90% of petrol fuels......... J |

I was thinkning about this too a while back. How about instead of LPG use a straight propane tank from a forklift? The only reason LPG is lower RON now is cos its become a mix between propane and butane(?) and the mixes arent consistant between servos anymore. Straight propane is about 115-120 RON. The tanks are small too, I dont know if they are different to normal LPG tanks though. I dont see why they should be. |

Can't you just run 98 octane with additive? (Ignore cost, are there any benefits?) |

(Ignore cost, are there any benefits?) That's what he and I are running now. Great stuff, BP & Mobil's 98, anyhow. |

I've always been told that LPG cost less at the pump, but costs more in engine wear... Stick to a nice 98. |

Lucas, i had a "little" holden V8 running on "that Crap" .... 660@flywheel from a 4.2 litre ........... When tuned and built for gas, you can get a SHITLOAD more power ...... basically, you can run a LOT more ignition advance and much wilder cam profiles than Petrol.. due to the slower-burn speed of the Gas ..... GRA in Vic have a fantastic Gas-only carb that really makes things sparkle.... J |

There is an LPG-only Mini in the Vic Mini Club. Watto did a feature on it for Mini Magic several years ago. Uses a gas-research carby and a tank that took up most of the boot. ![]() |

I remember that car, the first mini I ever went in on the road. Gets around alright, estimated 90hp I think. I think he's trying to sell it too. |
