Not unless you've got an electronically controlled automatic transmission.

I would love 5-speed manual boxes in my Van and Moke, but am yet to see or hear of functional, reasonably inexpensive solutions that maintain useability and feel. :?

a lot of english cars like triumphs added an extra gearbox to the output end of the standard 4 speed. the operation was by an electric solenoid (or something like that) and the switch was on top of the gear selector. can't do it to a mini box because the diff is the output of the box unlike a standard front engine rear drive gearbox layout.

I think you have heard about an electric overdrive. It is an auxiliary unit bolted to the back of a gearbox. A lot of pommy cars used them and it is not possible in a mini. The bloody thing was nearly as big as a mini box and heavier. Jags, Triumphs, MG's, all used them at one time or another. What I used to hate about them was you only knew if it was going to work once the gearbox was installed and if it didn't....pull it out and guess as to why. Five speed boxes ensured their demise thank god. The only good thing about them was their ability to be used in the intermediate gears as well as top which made a seven speed box, very handy on occasions.

Sounds WAY to complex for a Mini.

They also came out std on some jap cars before 5 speed boxes (e.g. toyota crown).
Work well, and were a popular conversion for other rwd cars. Not possible on a mini - the only gearbox outputs are the driveshafts, so you would need 2 units and there is not enough space to fit them there anyway.

Why is it that you can get a whole turbo motor & gearbox (Brad's Starlet GT powered Mini) for less than a 5 speed box :?

And the 5 speed Mini boxes for road use are mostly crap, anyhow. Poorly designed and don't last.

it is possible to do in a mini box,,,just that no one so far has been bothered to do it,,,

the fifth gear can be fitted where to conventional fifth gear would be situated in the other end of the box & simply use a solinoid to opperate it,,,but, it would need some "lock out" device so as not to be engaged until gearbox was in neutral

probly not real hard to accomplish really, but a fair bit of machining & making of parts as has been done by many companies allready,,,maybe modify an allready existing 5speed mini box to solinoid shifting opperation of all the gears :-)

KG engineering did build us 2 x 6 speed gear boxes years ago, the 5th was one to one ratio & the 6th was overdrive,,,super tough box but are dog engagement & pretty well race only ,,,& besides Darryl quit & sold up & is now working for Ford in Melbourne i believe,,,probly a good man to talk with about it if you were really keen tho :-)
