hey all, i while back i posted a topic about removing the cat, and i was told that i could and possibly should, i still havent done it for the fact that im a bit lazy haha, but now SG has posted pics of under slidey, i have noticed he has the same exhaust system as mine so i can can post a pic and make sure that what i am talking about gettting rid of is actually the cat. So is the thing in the yellow circle the cat and can i remove it?? awesome thanks everyone have a good long weekend!! trent

I don't think that is a cat I think that is anexpansion box or whatever it is called (forgotten) it is a bit like a muffler before the muffler to keep the noise down. I had to put one on my exhaust that I got made up because it was too loud. Anybody know different?? Either way I would pretty much bet that it aint a cat also are you running a standard A series in which case it is definitely not a cat unless someone is having a lend of you. Cheers matt |

As far as i know, cat converters were only for later cars (possibly with EFI engines etc or clubmans that have anti polution gear installed). If your car is a aussie roundnose from like 1960's or early 70's then it doesn't require a catalitic converter... Also I think cat's reduce the performance of your exhaust by a fair bit but don't quote me on that... You can buy a pipe that replaces this section, I have seen them on UK magazine ads. Sorry can't be of much more help than that... |

Ministar is probably right actually... If that is the case then you don't want to remove it as it's there to reduce the noise of the exhaust pipe... Actually this whole topic is covered in the Vizard yellow bible and I remember reading about it... |

Yeah that looks like a normal twin box RC40 setup. Catalytic convertors only come on cars that run unleaded fuel. Generally late EFI Rovers had catalytic convertors. You can remove it, even though it is most likely not a cat, and your exhaust will be louder, maybe a little bit less restricted (depending on the flow of the muffler, twin box RC40 is pretty good, if its just an aftermarket exhaust shop job, the muffler could be anything) Minstar, don't know much about exhaust systems, but I do know a lot of people who run multiple mufflers to keep noise down. Running only a hot-dog muffler is just a tad noisy, so generally you have another muffler (like a straight through) or even multiple hot dogs. Not sure if that works or not? But I have seen it done. |

thanks guys, i think ill just leave it there, it seems that i also must have an RC40 exhaust setup aswell, which is good news!! My engine is a 1275 a+ from a uk metro. thanks for your help!! |

yup, get rid of it
Mine always had (and will have again after licensing) Extractors - pipe - 18" hotdog - pipe. Thats it. Sounded great, went great.. I cant wait!!! Although... those chrome sidepipes keep twinkling in the back of my head..

Geez, how clean is the underside of Slidey?!? I would happily eat off that... I'm wondering how the exhaust note is on exhaust setups like this? Does it still retain a nice sporty note, just quieter, or is it all wooshy and shhhhhy like on a modern car? |

THEN Leave the exhaust system alone and work on some other area that needs maintenance

According to the makers of the RC-40 and mr Calver, the twin box exhaust actually produces more power than the single box. Now I am not an expert but when an expert says so - I tend to listen. Leave the thing there and enjoy. The stage one kits for the minis are nearly all twin boxes and must have something to do with the shock wave thingy endemic with the siamese port A series motors. I originally had a single box RC-40 and was loud and good. Then went to the twin box and actually found the noise was still there allbeit a little subdued, but I did notice a little bit more pulling power mid to high. Go figure... Rob Forsyth Miniot!! |
