Has anyone tried a fully floating front primary gear bush? They seem less hassle to install and replace than the old type which needs pressing and reaming.

No I haven't but I will next time. Sounds a good idea.
Last time I repaired one I fitted an `oilite' bush and bored it true in the lathe.
Haven't tried it yet- it'll go in with the stroker crank, next rebuild! :P

Yeah i thought it sounded pretty nifty... no more pressing and reaming.
I bet you had fun setting up the primary gear in the lathe! The only downside is i can only find these fully floating bushes on minispares uk. 16 pounds plus postage? would postage be very much?

They are only on MiniSpares site because they designed them, not a regular Mini part.
Postage... it weighs bugger all, would probably cost around 5 quid or so. More, if they send UPS etc as they often do. Tell `em to mail it.. :P

Setting up primary gear in the lathe was pretty easy with the gear I have. :wink:

I use one in my race/sprint mini, no problems. Friend with Nc mini also runs one, also no problems. Both of us found bush needed to be shortened by about 0.040" to work. Otherwise follow the instructions, works a treat.

Standard 1275 primary gear has steel backed bushes in it, lined with kryptonite :lol: or similar. The front bush wears, partly due to the side load on the gear which tries to make it orbit around the crank as it drives the idler. Fitting new bushes is a PITA as they are pressed in, real tight.
Keith Calver designed this bronze bush to be a slip in fit (once you get the old one out..). If it wears it's easy to replace. 8)
