Post subject:  Shocks and HiLos - order of attack?

guys Im going to replace my shocks with the Konis and fit the Hilos.
What order do I do it?
Shockies first or HiLos first?

I have one trolley jack and another normal car jack. No car stands or ramps although I was thinking of getting a set of ramps.

Rears:
Jack the rear end up (support it safely), remove wheels, then I can get the shockies out? Then undo whatever I need to get get the existing cones and trumpets out? Do the cones, fit the shockies, then put the wheels back on?

Fronts:
Jack up the front end from the subframe, support, wheels off, shockies out, cones and trumpets out (will work out what needs undoing when I get under there I guess)
HiLos in, shockies in, wheels back on.. done??

Could it be that simple?

You have correct...But you may need a Rubber Cone compressor...but as mentioned is an other thread you can always take out the top arm
Get some axle stands..I dont beleive you don't have some

yes all seems good to me, shocks should be the last thing to go in.

Front cones will need a cone compressor tool to get them out. Basically it screws in thru the top of the cone and gabs a thread in it, then when you tighten it up it compressors the cone flat and lifts the knucle from the upper arm. Then you take the trumpet/knucle out (this should come free from the cone) and then release the cone compressor. Then the cone should come out too if your replacing the cone, if not leave it in there.

If the trumpet does not release from the cone (like mine) then you may have to destroy it to get it out :( its ok if fitting hi-los as this is the thing they replace.

Beauty. The cones are new I think, if I have to destroy the trumpets to make it easy I will :) So if I destroy the trumpets (cut through them, they only thin steel from memory) then getting the cones out will be easy? Talking "if I have to" options here... :)

If you are lowering your mini, it may be a good idea to invest in "lowered" shock mounts for the front (assuming that the shocks are standard length)

The shock mount is the bracket that the top of the front shocker bolts to. A "lowered" bracket has a higher mounting point - it stops the shocks from possibly bottoming out.

Getting the piece out that the hi - los replace from the rubber piece it is in, was an absolute bastard to get out in my car.. and to get them out without a cone compressor, you need to remove the top arm on the fronts. Also removing the nuckles could also be a bit of a problemo.... The rears you will prob need to take out the rear trailing arm, to get the hi - los in. Prob gonna be nice and dirty under there as well

k, finally got to it this afternoon, started with the rears (first side), cone and trumpet out, knucle out of trumpet fiiiiinally, but the replacement hilo (fully wound in) with extension bar seems to be the same length as the old cone and trumpet and thats without winding the HiLos up one millimetre.

Do we have to remove a section of the extension bar to get plenty of adjustment after they are fitted? If I put them in as is I dont think its going to lower the ride height at all???

Edit: Finished both rears, Konis and HiLos in but even with Hilos wound right in there doesnt appear to be any difference in ride height .. but I can a good 12mm chunk out of the extension bars.. that'll fix em ;) Now I know how to do the rears, could do it blinfolded I reckon :) I know the fronts wont be so easy, but thats ok

That is not normal. Fully wound in, the hilo's should be at least half an inch shorter than a standard trumpet.

Were your trumpets standard length before you took them out??? A previous owner could have already cut them :?

Yep... Jill i had to cut the extension bars about 15mm.
When i had it in ricer mode (dropped down low), the cones kept coming out from the socket bit thingy bob when i jacked it up.
Now its at a sensible height its fine.

Hope that helps.

Oh; and make sure you dont cut so much out that the locating pin is exposed... it should be in the extension bar AND the bit of the hilo.

I guess it must be something to do with certain brands.

My HiLo's wind down lower than the bumpstops will physically allow, so mine must be different to both of yours.

Great :) Thanks Big willy.
This is mine after installing the Hilos at their lowest setting.... hardly rice mode. I will take about 15mm out of them - making sure not to decrease the machined section for the knucle or the Hilo.

and yes, I picked up my black paint today. the inside of the wheel arches WILL be painted!
