Post subject: | 1st gear woes |
I am hoping someone can shed some light on this matter without having the dollars signs rolling around the eyes. A few weeks ago I installed a Kad quickshift into my delux (remote change - 3 syncro) and lately it has been dropping out of 1st gear. I can also hear a rattle (as if somebody has dropped a coin in the gearbox) when I change from 2nd to 3rd to 4th, and have been told that it has been installed correctly. Any gear & diff place I ask just says "rebuild - $1500". Any help would be appreciated! |

Sorry Minivan, my grammer isn't the greatest towards the end of the week! What I was saying is that all other gear changes are fine. It's only when i try to use first that it drops out. |

Scotty, To keep a gear engaged each gear that slides on the main shaft has a set of tiny springs (3 ?) with a single ball bearing on each that clicks into a matching recess, (detent). If you hav'nt already, download the manual offered in another thread and look in the gearbox section. Problems then possibly, springs are bound or stuffed and not pressing the little ball into the detent, the hole itself is worn not locating the ball properly, either way its gearbox apart if thats the case. Remember though its these springs and balls which fly in every direction when pulling a gearbox apart and you forget ![]() Maybe the extra leverage from the quickshift combined with marginal springs has pushed it over the edge? however as its only first gear and you don't really need that one ![]() |

Just a guess, put the original shifter back in and see if it still occurs. Only then can you really evaluate the problem. If it still does it look at worn linkages, failing that get the spanners out and start sweaing. |
