Post subject:  Turbo? Supercharger? WEBER!?

I want to put either a turbo or a supercharger on my Mini (in the soon-ish future). What advantages/disadvantages do they have compared to each other? What do people recommend? I want to feel the power, but it doesnt have to necessarily tear the engine away from the shell... LOL!

Has anyone put a T25/T28 turbo in their Mini?

My Mini is getting a bit of a hardcore rebuild at the moment, so the engine will be strong as an ox (1430cc, new Kent cam, gaskets, bearings, hardened/stroked crank which was crack tested, schmick clutch etc.). I'm also getting disc brakes put on the front soon.

Also, has any crazy mofo put a turbo or a supercharger with a 40/45 DCOE Weber!?

Also, the less crazy modification the better, so simple is good. So really, a compromise between simplicity and power. Doesn't HAVE to be with Weber, I just wondered if people had done it.

Supercharger and turbo setups have been done with Webers/Dell'ortos. Look in Vizard - the Janspeed Metro turbo was a blow-through Dell'orto setup. I've also seen suck-through setups with a weber, not in a Mini though.

Could cover a few pages with advantages for supercharging/turbocharging, suck-through/blow-through, I think it boils down to preference, how you want the power applied in the engine (also rev range). If you are seriously interested, get a book on the topic. I just bought an older book "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacInnes (HPBooks) and I've found it a very interesting read. Not sure if I will actually turbo my car though!

Cheers,
Anto.

LOL! It's a rendering of King Kong I did for a computing unit at uni (I'm 3rd year Graphic Design student at Curtin here in WA). If anyone wants an awesome business card by any chance (just the artwork) or similar done for cheap, PM me.

As far as the topic of this thread goes, I would want the power to be reasonably "consistant", that is, not kick in late or forget about the lower end of the rev range. If that makes sense. If I could keep my Weber that would be fantastico!

A supercharger will give you a more even torque curv than a turbo, if that is what ya mean. What ever carby ya bolt to it shouldn't change that much.

sorry to say this, but at 1430, your bores will flex and your boost will blow past the pistons, then the bores will crack.... just not enough meat there to handle boost once you've bored it that far

If a low boost blower (5psi?) was used would this cause problems?

LOL skssgn! That sounds like a challenge! :D

Yeah, you're probably right though. I wouldn't want to have to rebuild it AGAIN...

A 1430 (stroker) is the same bore as a 1380- (73.5mm) I agree it's getting a bit thin for boosting...

we have a 1426cc mini speedway car sucking through twin 40mm dellortos out the front :-)

runs 8psi all day no dramas

there is going to be some bore flex on forced induction engines of this size, yeah,,,heck, any big bore engine gets some...but if it`s a daily driver & set up well so it doesn`t run hot, etc, then shouldn`t really present any bad issues at all,,,,what`s a little blow by between piston & bore anyways,,,just like having a little piston/bore wear really,,,not an issue as long as the breathing system is set up to cope with it... especially running such low boost shouldn`t really be a problem

do it i say,,,do it!!!!!!!!!

:-)

you can also use webers in blow through setups aslong as the floats are the nitrided type... either that, or you can foam fill them, though it makes them a little heavy.

I will be using a 45 weber on my sc12 blower. Aparrently, the SU's seem to work better, but i'm gonna try it either way.

With a supercharger, you will not need to rev the tits off the motor (if you have the right cam for it of course.) It will all be low to mid rev range power - perfect for the hills.
