Post subject:  Flares!
Not that I want to put some on Lillee but I ave a few questions:

With the "S" type flares, where can you get them from?
Are there good ones and bad ones? Which are good which are bad?
Are they usually fibre glass or plastic?
How do they attach onto the car? I believe the chrome seam strip is all that is holding them in? Is there some custom job to get them more secure?
How were the original ones on Cooper S's attached from factory?
Do you need to cut metal off the wheel arcs to fit them?
And finally how much should one expect to pay?

Steel only needs to be removed from the guards if you are going to 13" rims, or really wide 12's.

Does your car currently have S flares? If not, you have to weld metal under the guards that extend out as far as the flares, or else the chrome strip has nothing to attach to. Flares a rivetted on under the chrome (or through it).

Good 'S' flares = the ones from a Cooper S.

Bad 'S' flares = Clubman S flares :)

I think I can get them at work, but I can't remember what the price is (more than the screw on innocenti flares at least). I can find out tomorrow (Thursday) if you want, just PM me.

Tell me, are these wheel arc weld bits for sale over the counter somewhere or do you have to custom job it yourself?

So let me get this right, the answers to some of my questions are:

That just leaves:

some plastic ones, the screw on type dont need to have a metal strip welded on, at least mine dont have it!

Mini Kingdom should have them, steer away from going to mini and moke world...

Wood & Pickett ones are fixed from the underside. ie. screwed to the flange on the guard. They look very nice too. see Aaron' van on his Avatar.

im putting wood and picket arches on mine, they are good coz no origional panels are damaged, ie: have holes drilled in them eccept the finishing strip tab, which as the name suggests get covered by the chrome finishing strip anyway!!! i cant wait to get em
