Post subject:  Manifold bolt up
Hi guys,

As those who were at Jeff's on Sunday experienced, I have a crazy mouse/squirrel noise coming from my engine. It's doesn't occur through acceleration but comes in when the throttle is taken off. Occurs when the car is parked or at speed. Everybody was pretty sure its coming from the carby or manifold region.

When I first bolted on the Dellorto / Redline 3005 manifold I realised the manifold flange that bolts to the head is thinner than the flange for 3-into-1 extractors... hence the washers are applying plenty of force to the exhaust manifold and probably SFA to the inlet manifold. Has anybody got any hints on how I can get around this, aside from pulling out the extractors and having the face machined?

Aside from this pretty likely source, anybody else ever heard such a noise or have any ideas worth trying?

Use stepped washers?? :idea:

Put a spot of weld on one side of each thick washer (inlet side) then grind it until the step height is what you need. :wink:

How do you mean? The problem is that the manifold nuts apply pressure to a washer which contacts the exhaust manifold flange on one side and the inlet manifold flange on the other. As the exhuast and inlet manifold flanges are different thicknesses, the pressure is applied unevenly...

Just tack weld the washers like I said. Permanent fix. :wink:

Sure bring it round, we'll see if we can't melt some washers with the mig and annoy the new neighbors with that glorious dellorto induction noise (don't worry they're a pair of young chickies :) )

Zizzle helped me out yesterday morning and its worked a charm. Noise is gone, idle is smooth and pick up is back to being very nice. Thanks mate!

Now I've run into an other problem so I'll just tack it on here instead of starting a new thread.

I decided that I should repack the rear hubs as I haven't done checked them out since I bought the car, 2yrs. I was somewhat concerned because the front ones were so bad when I did them last year. I did the drivers side one no problem at all. The grease was pretty chunky and gross so I was happy that I did, and it all went smoothly.

I went around to the passenger side and found that the shaft locking nut was on heaps tight. Pumped it with some WD40 and left it for 1/2 hour before returning with the breaker bar. Managed to get the nut turning but its ****ing turning in place. This strikes me as being All Bad. Is there any other way to dismantle the hub, maybe from the back where the suspension bolts up? Is the 'stub shaft' (according to the shop man.) replaceable or do I need a whole new swing arm?
