Post subject:  Errrrr ,,,, Help ...BMW Bike engine head conversion

OK call me stupid...

I am just catching up on the fact you can put the BMW bike engine on the A series block

Sooooo ... how hard is this, can you do this to an injected car ( I assume you run 2 ECU's) does anyone do the conversion here in Melbourne ? what power result do you get ? Cost ?????

I am also looking at a supercharger kit from the UK to bolt on my MPi injected car ... its 3200GBP before importing and fitting .... does anyone do this here already ???

Talk to Matt (TheMiniMan) as he makes the kits to install them. No doubt you've seen his post here http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=46276

Also David Rosenthall has created a way to fit Honda CBR600F3 heads on too. Very Nice....

Matt's in Brisbane, David's in Adelaide (which might be better as you're in Melb and closer.

From what I understand about Matts BMW head conversion you would simply ditch the mini head, ecu, engine wiring (to an extent) and replace it with the BMW head, ecu (if you wanted that set up as you can simply use the std BMW carbys) and you would use the BMW ecu wiring loom. I think the price for a kit is around (don't quote me) $1500 plus a head ($250-$500ish) and the maching needed for the block. As for power unfortunately Matt hasnt had the opportunity to test this exactly but I think a ball park figures is around holly sh!t that's fast :twisted: IMO I think it's a very easy and cheap way of getting big power from an A series engine plus it opens up a lot of options for extra bolt on mods eg EFI, bigger carbys, turbo (Matt makes turbo manifolds).

As for the supercharger kits their is a few places in Australia that do them, Link Automotive springs to mind. The fun you would get from an SC set up on a mini plus the power would be a very good combination and it's still a true A series engine.

Ben aka 92 does a supercharger kit - under $1000 for the kit, plus about $300 for the blower off a toyota 4AGZE, and a HIF44 carb

does the UK kit work with MPi?

first up i must appologise for being so slow to sort out dyno figures for you all,,, I`m getting there with this turbo injected twin cam 16v moke,,, i just don`t get much time to play with the tuning of it cause i`m always surfing instead :-)

& the small bore twin cam runs a treat now too,,, It`s now in the car & running well on the carby, but we`re changing it over to injection now also

Figures from some of the guys in England are showing very smooth grunty 110hp-ish from N/A 1293cc 8v donks,,,, & over 200hp so far from Jimsters Turbo twin cam16v version,,, so obviously there`s way more avaliable

latest mini mag i have has a special k head dyno day on it and shows jim lyons turbo twin cam as mentioned above showing 216 bhp@ the wheels with a slipping clutch and 10 psi down on what it should be running :twisted: that is unbelievably impressive power

where in melbourne are you? some time in the future i could let u try out bens supercharger kit in my car. has a few benifits like detuning later on and no body mods. Is easy to bolt together and link are happy to tune the kits up aswell.

John (Justfanginaround) Is helping with my project. You are more than welcome to come have a look if you like, at the moment the engine is dummy fitted to the car in order to get an idea of where things fit. I have a mini 1963 / 65 round nose. We had to modify the bonnet to accomodate the engines extra height, and we are still scratchin our heads trying to figure a way of doing the induction without destroying the look of the car. Specs are 1275 block bored out to 1390cc, running BMW 8V k100 head conversion (Mad Matts set up) , hoping to fuel inject it, running full Siemans VDO guages, KAD race brakes front and back, with 13x6 inch Yokohamma race rubber :-) At the moment the project is on hold due to lack of money :-( , 20k spent so far, engine cost is not cheap.

Machining $1,300
Used BMW engine $550
Pistons $440
Conversion Kit $1,300 to 1,500 i think, not exactly sure
hi flow radiator $550
and still counting hehehe. It will be a wait before the car is opperational, however it should go like the clappers :-)
I will have it on display as a static work in progress at the mini 50 show comming up :-)

HI Andrew, glad to see you again :-) Sounds like youre well on your way to having it running soon, John (Justfangin) is a handy fella, good onya mate :-)

& on one of our twinkys we run a set of short bell-mouths on the std throttle bodies with 4x foam filter pods & they all fit neatly under the bonnet,,, so don`t stress about room or clearance for induction,,, it`s not a problem
